Hmmmmm

I think it's not really projection, so much as... what's the word. Basically reducing the person down to a caricature - it makes them not really a fully-rounded person anymore, but some kind of perfect harmless icon. And that's not how people actually are.

But that said, it doesn't always bother me either, sometimes it's harmless as long as people are reasonable about it. Sometimes it very much gets a vibe of putting someone on an impossible pedestal.

Yeah, it was more for 'fun' when I first heard it referred to a fictional character - but when people say this about real celebrities (especially grown up adult people) it irks me too.

I've mostly seen that said about celebs who are getting on in years, and almost always just after another much-beloved older celeb dies. Like everyone was constantly saying that about Betty White, I think a few days ago I saw people saying it about Dick van Dyke. Not so much celebrity-worship as acknowledgement that unfortunately even the really cool people in the world are mortal and won't be with us forever, and wouldn't it be great to have them with us for longer?

I think the only other time I've seen that phrasing used was towards young black actresses who had to deal with open hostility and racist BS and were handling it with more grace than expected for their years, in which case: Yes, I agree, they deserve to be protected and surrounded with love.

Sounds like someone's feeling a little insecure and defensive about writing fanfic as opposed to professional published fiction. Kind of like saying someone is "98 years young". It's okay to be old, you guys. I assure you that if I ever reach that age, I will insist upon being called "ancient" and "older than dirt", etc. etc. because it's an accomplishment.

"Pro-fic" is a useful umbrella term for original, published fictional writings--not all of which are novels, or even "books."

I'm actually with you, OP. "pro-fic" while technically correct doesn't usually read to my eye/ear as actual professional book-writing fiction, since "fic" is shorthand for fan-fiction, not book-fiction. So a "pro-fic" colloquially would be published, sanctioned fanfic, e.g. a Star Trek or Dr. Who novel.

but then, not only linguistic lines are blurring, genre fiction is blurring the line between authors and readers so I'm not shocked. It's annoying, so I'm with you on that, but at best I'll roll my eyes. terminally online fandom is gonna terminally online fandom, I say with zero sense of irony while on my only online fandom platform of the day.

Looks like Gen Z just discovered ageing. Yeah, it sucks my no longer quite so young friend. It really sucks, and just keeps getting worse.

At least Hawkeye didn't run himself over with his own snowblower though.

I do this too, OP, but not as strictly. I have separate IDs for a few different fandoms. I wanted to see at first if people liked my stuff because I did well in my first few fandoms -- whether it was the writing or me. Like Richard Bachman stuff. I did RPF with yet another name, really kinky stuff with another one, Yuletide with a fourth.

... but you wouldn't mind if someone else made them for you! As always, including the fandom and full character names is a big help, and I'll try my best to use an appropriate image choice. Just to clarify - it's my intention to make all the secrets left in this thread, so even if they're not marked claimed, they will be made.

I'll monitor this thread until tomorrow's secret post goes up, so feel free to leave your comments until then!
