I've mostly seen that said about celebs who are getting on in years, and almost always just after another much-beloved older celeb dies. Like everyone was constantly saying that about Betty White, I think a few days ago I saw people saying it about Dick van Dyke. Not so much celebrity-worship as acknowledgement that unfortunately even the really cool people in the world are mortal and won't be with us forever, and wouldn't it be great to have them with us for longer?

I think the only other time I've seen that phrasing used was towards young black actresses who had to deal with open hostility and racist BS and were handling it with more grace than expected for their years, in which case: Yes, I agree, they deserve to be protected and surrounded with love.

OP

Both of those contexts make way more sense compared to what I've seen. The contexts I've encountered involve men that are perceived to be vulnerable in one way or another.

Oof yeah. Possibly one reason I haven't seen that is because I am not exactly in tune with modern media and mostly don't see stuff about actors/artists unless they've been around for a long time. :\

NAYRT

With that said, I do hope Dick Van Dyke lives to be a hundred and ten.

Absolutely! What an icon. :D

Agreed, OP.
I've seen it recently with Keanu Reeves, Brendan Fraser and Pedro Pascal and with Chris Evans and Tom Hiddleston in the past. In the context I've seen it, it's always with men. Yes, they seem like nice people (I've always had a soft spot for Pedro and Tom Hiddleston in particular). But agreed, to me it always came across as infantalising. These are grown men who are at the height of privelege.
