Re: What did you just watch?

I was listening to a 6 hr podcast about the Titanic sinking and had the sudden urge to watch it. So I went and watched the 1997 movie. I remember seeing it in the theater (twice) as a young teen and thinking it the height of tragic romance. Looking back at it now, I want to scream, "You are literal babies, you've known each other for a day and a half, get in the fucking lifeboat!" The disaster part is still amazing, though.

Heeeee!!
I have never actually seen that movie; the Celine Dion song that went with it was EVERYWHERE and I got so sick of it I was just like 'hell no'.

Someone did a pretty good disaster cut of the movie on youtube, where it's just the boat sinking. No romance, no plot.

Oh, that sounds perfect, heh.

It must be exhausting to view fiction through the lens of what if this were real life.

I'm pretty sure I know what you're trying to say and No. I'm not an anti who thinks that everything should be pure and ideal. My comment was expressing the different ways I interacted with the media over the course of my life experience. When I had none, it was an amazing romance and true love. Once I had some, I watched it and realized it was literally two days and you can't know shit about someone in two days.

It's a comment on the writing, the directing, maybe on society itself for favoring those types of stories. Take a chill pill and maybe don't assume the worst of everything you read on the internet.

This is such a weird comment because one of the common things complained about on this website is romances that happen ‘like that’ without the characters even knowing one another for A DAY, which yeah on the scale of ‘things I can handwave’ barometer gets lower and lower the older I get because it’s unrealitistic to the point of absurdity.

That being said I agree a little more with meadow down below as in the context of the movie it makes sense for Rose to latch onto Jack so hard since she’d given up on life, but it’s also fair to the other anon that they don’t like it because it’s an overdone and silly trope. I can see where they’re both coming from.

you know what...I think the movie justifies that. Rose is literally about to kill herself, it's really unsurprising that she gloms onto manic pixie boy Jack.

This is true. But it's also just basically just a variation of teenagers who think they're in love after one day. And oh boy, do I hate manic pixie dream whatevers. It's like a shortcut so writers don't have to make a romance between two people actually believable.

yeah if you're already over the romeo and juliet set-up, titanic isn't going to help. but i also think archetypes are have rl counterparts, and so depicting the situations you might find them in isn't a shortcut, and if they're teenagers there is no way to make a quick romance unbelievable lol. undesirable? sure. unbelievable? no.

Oh yeah, totally. I agree it happens, but I hate it that movies try to say that it's REAL. 99.99% of the time when teenagers do this it does NOT work out. But in every movie it's true, and real, and the Right Choice. It's not unbelievable that teenagers would do this, what is unbelievable is that they would be RIGHT to do this.

I think we may just disagree about the focus on this for titanic then because to me between running off with a handsome but poor stranger is better than getting married to a rich abusive person. Like for a Rose type, not being abused is the right choice, imo. And well...it doesn't work out lol.

My friend was a DiCaprio fan with all passion of a teenager. I wasn't. Also Celine Dion's song was everywhere. So I was heavily prejudiced towards this movie. Years later I watched it and hated every minute of it. The annoying couple, not that interesting disaster part, the fucking narration.
I still don't know if I just dislike the whole plot or my annoyance at my friend was that influencing

I hated that movie enough to walk out of it, something I usually don't do in theaters.
