philstar22: (LOTR: Boromir smile)

In the books, he does show favoritism towards Boromir. But besides that he's not remotely like the movie version.

His main trait in the book is hopelessness. He's got one of the palantirs (those things that look like crystal balls). He was wanting originally to use it for good. But Sauron had gotten ahold of one of the Palantirs and thus was able to use it to show visions to Denethor of everyone dead, of Sauron winning. Denethor never is evil in the books, just completely depressed and has given up.

Really, it is similar to Theoden. In the books, Wormtongue only convinced Theoden that everything is hopeless. He doesn't actually use some kind of magic on him.

Basically, a common theme throughout LOTR is the importance of hope, that even in the midst of war, of the absolute darkest the world can get, there is always hope. And that truly heroic people in the midst of darkness will strive for the good and never give up their belief that there is hope and it is worth fighting for.

Very interesting, thanks!
I suppose his movie-character could be seen as an extreme of depression/hopelessness...so very dramatic.
