Venting and pet death tw

Came back from vacation to my roommate saying one of my chickens was killed and partially eaten by a raccoon and she didn't know where to bury the corpse so she left her in a bag on the porch for most of a week, but didn't want to tell me and ruin my trip.

When I got home there was another hen missing, roommate had somehow broken the coop door because she couldn't get it open, and then she'd not been able to shut it properly since, so in between the time she texted me on my way home from the airport last night and getting home another was killed and eaten except I never found a body just feathers. And she just dumped their food on the ground rather than in their feeder, and their water bowls were full of dirt, except for the one full of feathers from my poor dead hen and there's giant pools and smears of blood everywhere.

My cat bit her so she only fed her a couple times the whole time I was gone; I've been bitten by her cats loads of times and had to give them meds and stuff. I filled two big bowls with kibble and three with water because roommate somehow thought I'd be gone at the end of April rather than the beginning despite my texting her when I took the time off work, when I paid for the hotel, and when I bought plane tickets, and she left for LA for three days right when I left for NY, and so she was really only taking care of them for four days and still managed to let two of my pets die.

And I can't find the shovel to dig a grave for my poor hen. Plus I'm afraid to find the remains of the other one that got dragged off once they start to rot. She loved being picked up and carried, sigh.

It totally took all the shine off my trip. I need to at least go do laundry but I stayed up freaking out and hunting for my missing hen until 3 am, which my body thought was 6 am because jetlag, and then got up at actual 6 am but have done nothing productive since except make sure the coop will close and give my remaining hens clean food and water.

At least I took the weekend off but ffs, I'm so mad at my roommate rn; I would be devastated if one of her cats (or any animals) were hurt on my watch, much less this. She apologized and was saying she couldn't fix the coop door and just left it propped in place for a whole week.

She's stronger and better at fixing shit than I am and it took me ten minutes, in the dark, stepping in bloody feathers, and fucking exhausted, to fit the coop door back in the sliders (like a screen door.)

And I need to haul my laundry to the laundromat, buy groceries, buy a new shovel, and dig a big hole, but I just want to nap and cry.

Plus two of my neighbor's cats are basically my outdoor cats because they had five outdoor only cats with no chips or collars; I've had to give them tapeworm meds and take one to the vet before I knew who they belonged to. I'd take them in, but my cat is indoor only and loathes other animals.

I found out when neighbor came over to ask if one of their cats had died in my yard (no wtf I would notice the smell) because she'd seen them on my roof, and I explained that one had shown up with a nasty abscess and turned out to have fleas and tapeworms. She hadn't even known.

Well, one of the two that hangs out in my yard begging for treats disappeared a couple days before my trip—the one who likes to hang out in the middle of the street and under cars. Haven't seen him since I got back. Sigh.

What a dreadful experience, anon! I'd also be at a loss of words for what to say to your roommate that could even capture the emotions you must be going through right now. I have no advice I can give you because I know I'd be livid and vocal about it, but I am sending you a hug over the internet. I'm hoping the rest of your animals are safe.

I'm sorry this happened to you, and ugh, your roommate sucks. I've never raised chickens in my life and even I know you can't leave a coop door unsecured like that, with fouled water dishes. And I also know that cats need food and if they bite just... stay out of reach? Jesus, it's not hard.
