Yeah, that's fair. There are some themes and tropes that I no longer enjoy seeing in fictional media because of IRL issues, too.

Honestly, I really like the conspiracy of Picard season 1. It was a great commentary on certain people today. I mean, a group of Romulans who hate AI so much they are willing for their own planet to be destroyed in order to make sure everyone else hates AI? You'd think that wouldn't be believable, but it totally is.

I can see where you're coming from. I can compartmentalize enough to still enjoy conspiracy plots in fiction, but I also don't have any close loved ones who've gone down that rabbit hole IRL, so it doesn't hit quite as close to home for me.

I also struggle with this kind of thing when it comes to mavericky asshole characters. I've always enjoyed that character type, but in the last decade or so (and especially since 2016), my enjoyment of them has definitely been tainted by all the rampant right-wing populism that's taken over, because so much of the rhetoric there often hinges on the idea of "telling it like it is" and not being deterred from "speaking the truth" just because some people are "sensitive little snowflakes." Those guys and their supporters absolutely see themselves as cool mavericks who are speaking truth to stupid. And while their values and aims are vile and damaging where the mavericky assholes in fiction are usually (ostensibly) politically liberal and endeavoring to provide necessary aid, the underlying issue still remains: who made them the arbiter of what's "truth" and what's "stupid"? And what does it say about them that their default methods for getting things done involve bullying people out of their way? Is there not something inherently conservative about that approach to interpersonal politics?

I mostly think that writers should have the conspiracy ball taken away until they understand how irl conspiracies actually work. It's never 3 powerful people in a shadowy room tee-heeing about how powerful they're gonna be. It's never a whole bunch of (insert race/religion/political ideology) controlling your thoughts or whatever.

Irl conspiracies almost always involve either:

a) companies screwing people over because money. This includes systemic wage theft, active and passive union busting, and just straight up lying in advertising (see Nestle baby formula, the opioid crisis, etc.) Some of these people are bad actors who know they're doing some bullshit and don't care.

b) the classic Collusion Scandal. See the 80s air travel ticket bump (where all the airlines used the same program to systemically raise ticket prices at the same rate), the current rent algorithm bullshit, insider trading, etc.

c) government agencies doing some bullshit - CIA and FBI are the ones I'm most familiar with. While some of this stuff is pretty actively evil, the vast majority is people just kinda,,, looking the other way then coving up how much they looked away. Or just complete incompetence.

If writers want to write conspiracy plotlines, they should be required to actually pay attention to actual conspiracy conspiracies - as opposed to conspiracy theories.

Picard s1 and DS9 did conspiracy plotlines ok, but so so many things do NOT.

Hard to argue. If you see someone responding to a complaint of a hostile environment with the claim that they never see anything like has been stated, you know that that is the person people are talking about.

I wonder how many times I'll have to explain that Israel and being a Jewish person are inextricable. Yes, Israel has done questionable things, as has pretty much ever nation in the world. But when the US is accused of war crimes, anyone calling themselves an American and choosing to stay there or still wanting to move there from somewhere else isn't blamed for every evil America has ever committed. Why do people come to America? Safety, prosperity, a certain amount of freedom that is not guaranteed elsewhere (I'm a child of immigrant, TRUST ME America has real freedom).

Why do Jews feel strongly about Israel? Well, once upon a time in living fucking history ongoing attacks on Jews turned into a genocide. And it was carried out by people who lived next door to us for centuries and by governments we supported with our taxes. You know what Israel is? An assurance that there's someplace to go where we can be safe and if necessary take a last stand. As clearly as I can possibly put this: IT IS NOT SAFE TO BE A JEW. Israel exists as the emergency fallback that in the back of our minds, we all believe we will have to run to.

So yes, Israel has done some awful things. But it's still the one moderately safe haven for people who have never felt safe. Therefore, people have to stop being surprised when Jewish people defend Israel. If there were a bevy of countries with the assurances of safety that Israel provides, then sure a ton of us would condemn it. But there is nowhere else. I live in America where my freedom and safety is assured. I'm pretty sure my relatives felt the same way about Poland before they ended up in a ditch in the forest.
