I think you need to read your Bible a little more carefully, and listen to hate-filled radio personalities who twist scripture to build their own power base less. Jesus blessed a homosexual couple, and God's new covenant with us simplified Jewish law. If you don't keep kosher, why would you pay any attention to anything else in Leviticus either? There's no other outright condemnation of homosexuality in the Bible, provided it doesn't involve cheating on one's marital vows. (Or molesting children, but that's a whole different thing.)

Anyway, Ellen and Portia are in a committed relationship and are also adorable. Ship away, because God is all about love, not hate.

"Jesus blessed a homosexual couple" - Wut? Who was homosexual in the New Testament?

"G-d's new covenant with us simplified Jewish laws" - Homosexuality = okay is not a simplification of homosexuality = wrong.

"If you don't keep kosher, why would you pay any attention to anything else in Leviticus either?" - I may be wrong, but I'm sure I read something Paul wrote condemning homosexuality.

I'm not standing up for the homophobia. Just pointing that out.

I say Paul was a douche, so focus on Jesus. Jesus was so much cooler (and John the Baptist FTW!).

This slave business is curious. I'll have to check that out. I've read a lot concerning David's relationship with Jonathan, but none about this.

Personally, even if I was totally straight, I'm only vaguely kosher and wear mixed blend clothing all the time, I take the train to the synagogue on the Sabbath and various other things. So who's to judge? *Shrug*

Live and let live. Or something.

Ah, I sort of love you now. Catholics are the coolest Christians (apart from maybe Mormons, but they're their own special brand of awesome).

Are you a theology student or something? I'm going to be starting my Theology degree in September.

I agree about your view of the Abrahamic faiths. We're definitely family, however we're related. And like family, we have our seriously scarring issues. But love. A lot of love.

I'd love some references, whenever you've got time to gather them (if you're a student, I understand it's -that time of year-, so don't worry about taking your time).

I used to be a bit funny about David/Jonathan, but... actually, the more I look into it, the more I think they were in love with each other, regardless of whether or not they were in a sexual relationship. If they weren't, it's sort of... even more heartbreaking.

Not sure about the etiquette here, but I have two questions: one, what's your fandom(s) and two, mind if I friend?

Bah, there are a few Catholic crazies, but for the most part I find Catholicism fascinating. It's a bit like Judaism in the sense that as well as the religious Scripture, you're steeped in tradition and-- well, pretty things. :P

I'm going to be going to Heythrop College. It's in London, England. Where're you at? Your specialisations sound awesome. My problem is going to be that I want to specialise in everything, damn it. :P

"Epic romantic friendship" is a very good way to describe the David/Jonathan dynamic, actually.

I'm a Tolkien fan, but not in the fandom. :P The reason I asked, actually, is because I'm writing a HP fic (first one to go on my LJ - I'm new here) which it going to focus on Jewish theology.

*Runs off to friend*

Also LOL I'm slow, but did you know there's a fandom for the Bible? O.o

I'm so excited you've heard about Heythrop! Are you doing your degree or masters? And what year are you in?

Oxford though... lush. I considered applying there, but I thought I'd best apply to places I stand a chance of getting into. :P

I'd better go do some revision now. -_-'

And good luck with your essay. :D

One of my personal problems with Christianity is that hardcore Christians read so much importance in words of disciples like Paul, but isn't the point of Christianity to be like Christ? How can you reconcile the love & peace teachings of Jesus with the often hateful and misogynist words of Paul?

I'm not railing on anyone here, I'm just venting an issue I've had for years...

[identity profile] andbetty.livejournal.com 2009-05-31 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Wait wait wait this wouldn't be the official who didn't want to let Jesus into his house and said (paraphrasing, it's been a while since catholic school lol) "I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and my servant shall be healed", and whose words millions of Catholics repeat every Sunday in church?? Because if that's the same guy. Lol. Trolled.

[identity profile] bleed-peroxide.livejournal.com 2009-05-31 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
You're indeed right. This is a really good article I found about it. (http://www.ghmcc.org/ghmcc/index2.php?option=com_content&do_pdf=1&id=454) Spread that baby like wildfire.

(Anonymous) 2009-05-30 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Paul's words were far more complicated than you're remembering. Please read his letters again with historical context firmly in mind. As for the blessing, I'm referring to the centurion and his servant. You'll want to pay particular attention to specific word choices in the original Greek.

And yes, the new covenant did simplify Jewish laws, because men had screwed things up by keeping the letter of the law rather than the spirit. In that, a bunch of other stuff became okay. Leviticus happens to be the only bit that specifically names homosexuality as an abomination, and it does so while also naming vegetable gardens and men who shave as abominations as well. So any anti-homosexual argument that uses Leviticus as a basis is flawed from the start, especially if the speaker doesn't even keep kosher.

Because I'm on my way out the door, I'll be lazy and toss you a link to point in the direction of further research:

"Men screwed things up" - hello, you're talking to a Jewish person. :-)

I'll have a look at the slave thing. I've never heard that interpretation before.

Also, you might want to argue with the person who was agreeing with you about Paul. They think Paul condemned homosexuality.

(Anonymous) 2009-05-30 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for that link. This Christian is now questioning what their pastor says about homosexuality.

*cheers*! :D

Anytime one of my mates cusses on homosexuality because "It says so in Leviticus" I like to yell at them to stop shaving their legs (if female) or faces (if male) because THIS IS ALSO AN ABOMINATION.

XD I'mma start doing that too. What have their responses been, out of curiousity?
