Re: Strange/Weird Fandom Encounters

Met someone I'd chatted with online for 10~ yrs through multiple fandoms. And when I met them IRL at a convention, they barely talked to me.
We walked through the con with them mostly staring around like they were bored. I asked them questions about how their weekend was going, what they'd been up to, what about the con they wanted to do, what was exciting to them. And they gave really short answers with no followup.
Some of their answers were really canned, like stuff they'd written to me in DMs. Like, I asked them what was their favorite part of a panel for a show we're both into and they said they were proud of the lead actor landing the role he did because they'd been a fan of the actor since his first role in a movie where he had a small part. And it's like, OK, that's not really answering the question and ISTG they said that about the actor in DMs when we were talking about the show the year before.

I was able to enjoy the con on my own, but NGL meeting them and talking to them made me feel bad. Like, if they didn't want to hang out with me they didn't have to. Walked out of that encounter wondering if this person even wanted to be my friend/liked me as a person.

Like...it was weird. What's even weirder is after meeting IRL they began being really nice in DMs. I got weird vibes and they were really inconsistent with communication so we stopped interacting a few months after that.
