Reddit is really shockingly bad, just not in the way that everyone says it is (it's not that the posters there are particularly morally bad or gross, they're just boring and dumb and prone to group think)

Tumblr is good but I still don't really understand how to interface with it

I have gotten some of the most dull, thoughtless, repetitive, mind-numbingly stupid comments on reddit. At least tumblr is amusingly unhinged.

Right, like, 90% of comments you see on Reddit are utterly replacement-level drivel. The most banal, obvious, dull opinions it is possible for humankind to generate.

On one of my fandom reddits we have people come every week and ask "I figured [first the most easiest never a secret] plot twist, do I need to continue watching". I think I am going to start biting people soon.

I think it's down to the fact that you can reblog without adding anything. So you only have to say something if you have something to say.

There are occasionally thoughtful and interesting discussions. Then there are people going "I've never thought about it but you're wrong" and just screw those guys.

I have had the exact opposite experience. Tumblr is a hivemind and the fans aren’t very smart or creative. Reddit is amazing for my fandoms! Lots of intelligent and interesting discussions, better quality fanworks, and everyone is in the fandom to celebrate what they love about the canon. But I’m not really good at posting or commenting, so I mainly lurk.

I’ve seen both dull and banal, and intelligent and thought-provoking people and discussions on Reddit. It’s a varied place for me. My experience of Tumblr couldn’t be farther from it being a hivemind, though.

I think it really depends on the subreddit, the mods, and how much the hivemind has turned against the material.

Look up Youtube guides to Tumblr, they tend to give out good advice.
