I have had the exact opposite experience. Tumblr is a hivemind and the fans aren’t very smart or creative. Reddit is amazing for my fandoms! Lots of intelligent and interesting discussions, better quality fanworks, and everyone is in the fandom to celebrate what they love about the canon. But I’m not really good at posting or commenting, so I mainly lurk.

I’ve seen both dull and banal, and intelligent and thought-provoking people and discussions on Reddit. It’s a varied place for me. My experience of Tumblr couldn’t be farther from it being a hivemind, though.

I think it really depends on the subreddit, the mods, and how much the hivemind has turned against the material.
