Secret maker here.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-11 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Hello,

I'm not comfortable doing that, and I'll explain why. First, due to time zone differences, not everyone sees the comment secret post right away and I don't want to leave anyone out just because they don't get online until later.

Second, I'm not comfortable being the one who decides what is and is not a troll secret. I'm not very well equipped to do that for subtle trolls because I'm frequently unfamiliar with the fandoms/characters or context for the secret, so I don't really know what people are referring to and whether or not it's a legitimate issue. I'm also aware that because this is a secret community, it's only natural that some secrets would contain controversial opinions. For obvious trolls, I'd still rather leave it up to the community to respond or not respond as they wish. To do otherwise puts me in the position of being a self-appointed moderator/censor, which isn't appropriate.

Cheers,

a secret maker

DA

You're the best, Secret Maker. <333

I can respect trying not to appoint yourself as a moderator /censor. But also I can't respect anyone who uses this kind of language even if it just repeating what you see. It's not a fandom issue, it's being decent to other people issue.

OK, f!s, it's been a pleasure. Thanks for all the memories and fish.

When you say “But also I can't respect anyone who uses this kind of language even if it just repeating what you see.”, are you referring to the troll, or the Secret Maker? Because if it’s the latter, I don’t understand what you mean.

DA I'll answer because who knows if they'll be back

They're referring to the secret maker.

This is my speculation, but I think that OP believes that by creating and posting the secrets, the secret maker somehow endorses what is being written by others. Or even not endorse per se, but that by repeating the slur they're actively spreading hate.
It doesn't make much sense to me, but I'm very much against any type of censorship. Especially on this type of community.
I think it's sensible to put trigger warning, but censorship? NAH. If the secret is a troll we'll just either take the bait and entertainment yourselves or ignore it.

I also don't like how this person tries to shift the responsibility of the secrets posted here to our secret maker. They shouldn't EVER be held responsible for any secret they create for others. I don't want them to even feel guilt for any secrets. They are just doing a service to this community.

If someone should ever be held responsible for posting a secret, that'd be Case. They're the one deciding if a secret is really a fandom secret or a non!fandom secret etc. I do personally believe that troll secrets are OK and shouldn't be censored but YMMV.

(BTW I do get distancing themselves from the community because of toxicity and negativity. Everyone's different and want different things in their daily lives. I wish OP the best <3)

nayrt, but i'm assuming that they mean that they can't respect the secret maker for making obvious troll secrets full of slurs, even if they're just copying what they've been given.

There are no slurs in this secret. I am transsexual myself, I fought the medical system long and hard for that diagnosis, fought to get recognised, fought to get fucking respect, fought to get treatment, and fought the fucking Thatcherite government for it all too, I was part of the lawsuits that made Trans Rights become fucking Human Rights in the UK, because they were not always and it was a long fight to get them, and nobody has the right to take it from me. Certainly not this whiny little shit who just wants to silence every opinion they disagree with.

NAYRT

It can be considered a slur when it’s used to refer to transgender people, because it’s not a term that can be used as an umbrella for every trans person. Because sex and gender are different things. But transsexual people exist too, and nobody has the right to try to invalidate your identity. I just don’t think that anon was trying to do that. There is some transphobes in this community, so they were presumably trying to stop more transphobia from being spread here. And while I can understand and sympathize with that, as a trans man, I don’t think I agree with trying to control what secrets get made in the way they did. And certainly not blaming the secret maker for not feeling comfortable making that decision either. It’s fine that they want to leave the community though, that’s their right and they should do what’s best for their mental health.

It would be nice if there was a moratorium on secrets that expressed transphobic rhetoric and general bigotry, that would help transsexual people as much as transgender people. But it’s easier said than done. Especially because people should still be able to make secrets about works and people that are transphobic(not counting a specific instance, of course). That can help people vent their feelings about the work. So limiting it to only transphobia expressed by the secret maker, but not limiting it if it’s about transphobia or transphobes. That sounds like an overly complicated moratorium to make. That’s what I mean when I say it’s easier said than done.
