I just wish more shelter dogs were smaller mutts and not PIT BULLS.

I don't want to argue with anybody about how great pit bulls can be and how yours is very nice. I don't want a dog with the jaw strength to eat my head if they get a brain tumor and snap. I want a dog like Benji.

CW: animal abuse :(

AYRT

Oh I totally get that! I live in an area where if I was to look online and see what my local shelter has available, 6/10 in the least are pitbulls or pit mixes. Which I feel bad about, I know sweet pits and I know not nice pits, but I personally don't want one. I want a little Jack Russell/small terrier mix I can bark back at and play with. Lol.

CW!!!!

Look away :((((

Bonus:
While it's not the roughest neighborhood, where I grew up the pitbulls always had screwed up faces. Like they always looked worried or angry. For nearly twenty something years or more of my life I always thought they naturally had these anxious faces with lines and creases as part of their "resting" faces. It was only when more people started adopting or getting pitbulls in the larger metro area (better off, different demographics), that I realized that pitbulls don't naturally look like that.

I reckon it could have been dog fighting or just general abuse a la shitty ownership, or who knows what else, but it made me feel really bad for these dogs that already have a bad rap. And I say that as someone whose mom was attacked by one of these dogs because of a shitty owner (large metro area, kids all around, smaller dogs in the area, and your dog is unleashed???). Anyway.

Aww, that breaks my heart. I just don't understand anyone who mistreats these innocent pets. My cousin has two pit mixes she adopted that are very fun floofs that love to cuddle and play.

But really, I would like to see pit bulls neutered and to see the breed reduced in numbers because of these bad owners. It's these "macho" Andrew Tate fucks who want tough dogs who have ruined this breed.

This is the one thing I dislike about the 'adopt, don't shop' people. I would LOVE to adopt from a shelter! When my senior dog died last year, I immediately looked at all the local shelters....and it was 90% pit bull mixes. The other 10% were chihuahuas. I don't want a pitbull or a chihuahua. I know they can be great dogs if you train them right, I don't care, I do not want one. I'm also allergic and need a hypoallergenic breed.

I tried looking at rescues that had smaller dogs, but they literally wanted multiple reference letters from non-relatives (I'm autistic and introverted and don't have a lot of IRL friends), a detailed list of my living situation and required me to have a fenced in yard even if I just wanted to adopt a damn lap dog that isn't leaving my yard without a leash. So yes, I bought from a small local store in the end. Maybe less people would shop if it was easier to adopt something that's not a pit bull.
