Yes to everything you said (except that I've never been to Chicago and don't know much about it).
I'm not really a rom-com person, but this I love. I love the way it says that family is important, but both lead characters have to look at what they are dong with their lives, and Jack confesses that he's been putting the family business ahead of what he wants for himself. So they're also important as individuals, and it has a nice balance, I think.

Okay, so I've never read these books, but is a character's sexuality specifically aligned with a kind of magic? Or it just so happens? And does sexuality play a major role in these books, or not?

Not asking in bad faith, it's just from what you describe, it makes for an interesting and badass character. It kind of makes me want to read one. That one specifically.

Holy shit! This series was my jam when I was a kid (Lirael was my favorite book), but I honestly didn’t know Clariel existed and Google tells me there are even more books. I’m so freaking excited to read the other ones! But I am a little wary of Clariel given this secret.

I never got the chance to test this out, but I think the DLC let you pet the dogs, so there's at least some comfort!

Alas, I always kill them in Ghost because the really sniff you out and ruin your attempts at stealth.

It doesn't happen that often, but it has happened before, and tbh I don't like getting comments that feel like someone is doing it out of obligation. It makes me feel like I've forced someone into something they didn't enjoy, and there's not much you can say back besides "thanks!" if someone clearly forced themselves through something they didn't understand or enjoy. Which is a fine response! It's just not... fun for me.
