I think this form of filmmaking has been a bit of a lost art in mainstream moviemaking. It's more about finding a franchise and the next big marketing thing.

The problem is that this approach is almost certainly correct, at least at the object level. From a financial point of view, making a bunch of mid-tier movies meant that you made a lot of movies that not a lot of people really wanted to watch. Whereas almost everyone wants to watch franchise blockbusters. Those are absolutely the correct kinds of movies to make if you just want to sell tickets to people.

The problem is that mid-tier movies are great, and make life better, and not having them sucks. And also, Hollywood needs to flip stuff up creatively every 20-30 years because moviegoing audiences evolve.

I love this movie so much. Yes to everything you said about Lucy. And Bill Pullman was so hot back then, I had the biggest crush on him!

Yes to everything you said (except that I've never been to Chicago and don't know much about it).
I'm not really a rom-com person, but this I love. I love the way it says that family is important, but both lead characters have to look at what they are dong with their lives, and Jack confesses that he's been putting the family business ahead of what he wants for himself. So they're also important as individuals, and it has a nice balance, I think.
