Listening to the If Books Could Kill podcast episode on Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus and I just am so sick and tired of advice like that. In case you've remained blissfully ignorant, the book includes advice for men and women to communicate better. Advice for men is: women don't want solutions, when they complain just kind of listen to them until they tucker themselves out. While advice for women is: "could you plant the flowers today?" is not a direct question and men feel free to ignore it. "I'd like to go out more" is too direct a comment and men interpret it as "You are a failure of a man because you don't take me out more." Like. No. I hate that it gives free reign for men to ignore women because we didn't phrase some question perfectly, didn't thread the needle of active word choice but sweet blamelessness, and that this is the advice given to women! Not, "Hey guys, if you are asked to do something please do it! Don't look for flaws in casual language for an excuse to ignore your wife and don't take simple requests as hateful criticism!"

I just. WOO. So tired. And sure, it's a 30 year old book but 1992 is 'modern' enough to know better. This book should be cast into the sun except for a few copies to serve as a primary document of this author's entitlement.

They even made a board game out of that wretched book. Going by the commercial, it was to ostensibly be a game men and woman would play at parties or double dates to get to know each other better, or to understand your SO more. The flaws in using that book as a dating/flirtation game to get the opposite sex more should be obvious.

yeah, that stupid book just holds up a lot of shitty sexist stereotypes that aren't even accurate, I can't stand it and it manages to be damaging to men and women!
