We live in different worlds OP because when I've had someone not familiar with my canon leave a nice comment on my fic I've always been pleased. Yeah they might get a few things wrong about the character dynamics or personalities, but the fact that they decided to say something nice when they really didn't have to, because they don't know the source material, is sweet. Especially so when you're the only person writing for a canon in an exchange so if no one made these comments I'd never have gotten any response, lol.

I'll take well-meaning, if not fully-knowledgable, comments on my fic than silence tbh.

Exactly this, and it is always possible to leave positive comments that have NOTHING to do with the canon, such as β€œThe way you phrase things is so vivid, I can really picture the scene!” or some such thing. It takes practice, but it is a nice thing to do in exchanges.
