I know it's a simple diagram but it still makes me chuckle.

It doesn't happen that often, but it has happened before, and tbh I don't like getting comments that feel like someone is doing it out of obligation. It makes me feel like I've forced someone into something they didn't enjoy, and there's not much you can say back besides "thanks!" if someone clearly forced themselves through something they didn't understand or enjoy. Which is a fine response! It's just not... fun for me.

I once participated in a small art exchange, and there was one person who made it her mission to comment on every contribution, even those which had nothing to do with her gift or her own contribution. I'm sure it was meant as a nice gesture, but her comments were like this as well. She was so oblivious, it was almost insulting. For example, someone has drawn someone else's OC, who was a demon. She commented with her thoughts on it (positive stuff, from what I remember), and then said something like, "His hands look like claws, but I can't do it any better, so I shouldn't say anything more I guess". The rest of her comments just tended to often have this one weird bit where it was hard to tell if she was rude or oblivious. At some point, I left the community, and one of the reasons was that I didn't want to talk to her anymore.
So, TL;DR: comments are nice, I get it, but good will does not necessarily lead to nice comments, especially if there is a lack of knowledge or subtlety.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. If they hadn't commented then you'd have been here complaining about being ignored, never change FS.

XD so many times I feel like we are own worst enemies by never being happy

No and fuck you.

Seconding.

That’s a lot of assumptions ayrt is making with no basis.

So many readers reading this are going to further be discouraged from leaving comments lol it's like a world of no right moves

like I don't read a lot of fic but I try my best to leave a comment if I enjoyed the fic...but ngl between writers not interacting and seeing secrets like this, I just don't know if I want to leave comments, especially long ones where I go over every tiny thought and observation I made while reading the fic. I want to but I often feel like "why am I doing this?" Like maybe I'm leaning too hard on external validation to feel like it's something worthwhile

I think you're misreading the secret. it is specifcally about someone who don't know OP's fic's canon and decided to comment out of some kind of obligation anyway, while noone forced/asked them. it has nothing to do with you commenting on fics you read, unless of course, you also read fics of canons you're not familiar with - then yea.

DA
Yeah... WHY would you read fanfics of canons you're not familiar with?

(Anonymous) 2023-04-12 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I've done that a few times because the writer was so good. It happened more often in the days of personal websites than nowadays. Oddly enough, one of those writers came into my tiny fandom some years ago, and she's now an irl friend, which is bloody awesome.

I generally don't read things I'm completely unfamiliar with, but sometimes do when something notable turns up in Yuletide. More commonly, I'll read the occasional crossover fic where I'm only familiar with one of the canons.

AYRT

Maybe my insecurities are triggered because I always feel judged on "how much I know in canon" so leaving a glowing review on a ship I love I worry I might have interpreted the ship differently from what the author wanted so reading this secret had me feeling like "oh shit I have to be well versed in the fandom I'm reading for for too??"

Like, I don't know the ins and out on Star Wars fandom nor do I have strong feelings about ReyLo but I do enjoy ReyLo fics from time to time.

I've often been publicly called out for saying something dumb a lot, can you tell? (^_^;)

This.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-12 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
We live in different worlds OP because when I've had someone not familiar with my canon leave a nice comment on my fic I've always been pleased. Yeah they might get a few things wrong about the character dynamics or personalities, but the fact that they decided to say something nice when they really didn't have to, because they don't know the source material, is sweet. Especially so when you're the only person writing for a canon in an exchange so if no one made these comments I'd never have gotten any response, lol.

I'll take well-meaning, if not fully-knowledgable, comments on my fic than silence tbh.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-12 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly this, and it is always possible to leave positive comments that have NOTHING to do with the canon, such as “The way you phrase things is so vivid, I can really picture the scene!” or some such thing. It takes practice, but it is a nice thing to do in exchanges.

I would like to note that I don't consider this passive-aggressiveness, because you can it in the vibe of broadening knowledge, but is there anyway you can't just say "thanks you! I thought since in canon X does Y, I would explore Z here. If you've never checked it out, I would encourage it!" to soothe your soul a bit and then move on?
