I think you're misreading the secret. it is specifcally about someone who don't know OP's fic's canon and decided to comment out of some kind of obligation anyway, while noone forced/asked them. it has nothing to do with you commenting on fics you read, unless of course, you also read fics of canons you're not familiar with - then yea.

DA
Yeah... WHY would you read fanfics of canons you're not familiar with?

I've done that a few times because the writer was so good. It happened more often in the days of personal websites than nowadays. Oddly enough, one of those writers came into my tiny fandom some years ago, and she's now an irl friend, which is bloody awesome.

I generally don't read things I'm completely unfamiliar with, but sometimes do when something notable turns up in Yuletide. More commonly, I'll read the occasional crossover fic where I'm only familiar with one of the canons.

AYRT

Maybe my insecurities are triggered because I always feel judged on "how much I know in canon" so leaving a glowing review on a ship I love I worry I might have interpreted the ship differently from what the author wanted so reading this secret had me feeling like "oh shit I have to be well versed in the fandom I'm reading for for too??"

Like, I don't know the ins and out on Star Wars fandom nor do I have strong feelings about ReyLo but I do enjoy ReyLo fics from time to time.

I've often been publicly called out for saying something dumb a lot, can you tell? (^_^;)
