I somehow got on breeder tiktok. And I can't stand how so many of them complain about how "adopt, don't shop" is what is driving so many breeds to extinction. Because there is no demand for rarer breeds (or whatever the top 20 breeds are). And it is such bullshit. People don't buy rare breeds because they cost like $8000. I get that there is a low supply so you can demand what you want but that is going to make people not buy any.

Look, we need to sit down as a society and decide once and for all what certain words are going to refer to going forward, because I shouldn't be this confused by a post like this

DA
I too did not expect OP's post to go in the direction it went as far as 'breeder tiktok' is concerned.

Anon from below:

Hella confused!!! And was surprised they let that shit in TikTok! Tumblr straight ran away and found itself a place.

Oh, I'm fairly certain that such a Tiktok does exist. Even if it's not actually the one being discussed RN.

I was very confused for a moment -- like anon is either talking about something sexual, or livestock.

There are so many corners to TikTok! That said, I'm all about adopting, and there are some dog breeds I just LOVE, but you are correct. I don't have $8k to spend on a getting a dog. A puppy! That I'll have to also spend money in training. I'll be okay with a shelter dog, or the puppies or dogs that people can't move with.

I just wish more shelter dogs were smaller mutts and not PIT BULLS.

I don't want to argue with anybody about how great pit bulls can be and how yours is very nice. I don't want a dog with the jaw strength to eat my head if they get a brain tumor and snap. I want a dog like Benji.

CW: animal abuse :(

AYRT

Oh I totally get that! I live in an area where if I was to look online and see what my local shelter has available, 6/10 in the least are pitbulls or pit mixes. Which I feel bad about, I know sweet pits and I know not nice pits, but I personally don't want one. I want a little Jack Russell/small terrier mix I can bark back at and play with. Lol.

CW!!!!

Look away :((((

Bonus:
While it's not the roughest neighborhood, where I grew up the pitbulls always had screwed up faces. Like they always looked worried or angry. For nearly twenty something years or more of my life I always thought they naturally had these anxious faces with lines and creases as part of their "resting" faces. It was only when more people started adopting or getting pitbulls in the larger metro area (better off, different demographics), that I realized that pitbulls don't naturally look like that.

I reckon it could have been dog fighting or just general abuse a la shitty ownership, or who knows what else, but it made me feel really bad for these dogs that already have a bad rap. And I say that as someone whose mom was attacked by one of these dogs because of a shitty owner (large metro area, kids all around, smaller dogs in the area, and your dog is unleashed???). Anyway.

Aww, that breaks my heart. I just don't understand anyone who mistreats these innocent pets. My cousin has two pit mixes she adopted that are very fun floofs that love to cuddle and play.

But really, I would like to see pit bulls neutered and to see the breed reduced in numbers because of these bad owners. It's these "macho" Andrew Tate fucks who want tough dogs who have ruined this breed.

This is the one thing I dislike about the 'adopt, don't shop' people. I would LOVE to adopt from a shelter! When my senior dog died last year, I immediately looked at all the local shelters....and it was 90% pit bull mixes. The other 10% were chihuahuas. I don't want a pitbull or a chihuahua. I know they can be great dogs if you train them right, I don't care, I do not want one. I'm also allergic and need a hypoallergenic breed.

I tried looking at rescues that had smaller dogs, but they literally wanted multiple reference letters from non-relatives (I'm autistic and introverted and don't have a lot of IRL friends), a detailed list of my living situation and required me to have a fenced in yard even if I just wanted to adopt a damn lap dog that isn't leaving my yard without a leash. So yes, I bought from a small local store in the end. Maybe less people would shop if it was easier to adopt something that's not a pit bull.

What nonsense. High prices and endless health issues because the poor creatures are bred to a fare-thee-well is what's driving them do extinction. And good riddance to most of it, I say.

Oh this, so very this.

The BBC documentary Pedigree Dogs Exposed (which may be online someplace but I know not where these days) was just wrenching.

Re: Sort of based on 5

Yeah; "not held to breed standard" working dog breeds/types that still help herd sheep or whatever will last so long as their jobs do, but show-winning purebred dogs whose whole existence is about looks and pedigree and exclusivity are so often insanely expensive bundles of neuroses and health issues that even if I had the money, I'd rather adopt.

And if I had serious money, I might throw some at the breeders working to undo the effects of decades of (in)breeding to standards that doom whole breeds to short lives full of pain. Eyes that pop out, heart problems, cancer, breathing problems, brachiocephalic breeds being delivered by c-section because we've recreated the human "hips too narrow for big heads" problem in dogs, hip dysplasia, skulls too narrow for brains causing lifelong headaches...

If breeders aren't working to give the breeds they steward back their quality of life, they deserve to go broke, and kennel clubs can preserve frozen sperm and ova of extinct breeds or something until someone wants to actually fix those problems.

Working dogs are insanely expensive too, but for good reason! And the most important things are still health and intelligence, not a horrific and unethical breed standard.

That sounds like a bunch of assholes trying desperately to justify their shady practices. Backyard breeders suck.
