Hah, yeah, the book narrator is not exactly likeable, but I feel like that's part of the bit, for some reason. Do yourself a favor and check out the movie too, it's much less cynical, and way more fun. The narrative frame change makes it feel like a whole new story, which is pretty neat from a storytelling PoV.

... It would've been so interesting if they'd done several retellings with a different narrator (or the same one at different points of his life, if we're assuming that grandpa in the movie is also the author's self insert, and then see how the story shifts in response)
