Write them, sure. But post them in public? Posting your private fandom fantasies is just weird to me. Those are by their nature entirely personal.

Fanfiction in general is basically a private fandom fantasy. Making self-insert fanfiction just adds an extra layer of personalization, but the core concept of playing around with canon remains the same.

That... that's a take to have. By that logic no art or even thoughts should be posted online (because everything we share online is arguably an extension of private/personal fantasies).

AYRT

The difference is that with most fics there is probably going to be shared interest with at least a few people. Self-inserts are very specifically designed after the author and are going to be a lot more specific to that person.

I see what you mean, and I don't share mine, but I've actually read self-insert fic and enjoyed it to be honest.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-16 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Relax, a million billion Mary Sue fics could get posted and there’d still be plenty of internet left for you.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-16 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
well now I'm definitely gonna post them now.

I love writing self-insert stuff but at the same time I want to distance my name away from that kind of stuff for now because I want to focus on shipping canon characters. Though the idea of posting self-insert stuff anonymously is looking pretty enticing.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-16 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
posting self insert fics on anon is a lot of fun, this anon is encouraging you to do it

(Anonymous) 2023-04-16 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
You're so right OP. I still make self-insert fic or play with ideas. It can be very therapeutic and fun and some people really could use that. Besides, there is good self-insert fic out there, definitely not the majority, and I already had previously self-insert turned actual solid OCs.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-16 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
I admire the sincerity of them.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-16 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
I agree! I never wrote self-insert fics as a kid (I also had no internet and no idea fandom existed) because I was way more interested in the canon characters. So instead I had a whole lot of Canon Sues who were the MOST whumped and MOST angsty and MOST tragic. Now as an adult reader I much prefer it when people write their self-insert or other OC because then my overwrought teen style is much easier to avoid in the first place.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-16 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing wrong with those Mary Sues.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-16 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
this reminds me of the "muse worlds" and "muse mansions" of the early LJ fandom days, where we'd write about living in a mansion with our version of canon characters. it was silly and fun and usually resulted in the weirdest plot bunnies. good times.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-16 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I remember those.

Damn, I'm old.

I think the Gundam Wing ones were soooo funny...

(Anonymous) 2023-04-16 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
Self Inserts are my favorites! 2nd POV as well.

For myself, the self insert is still a character. She won't act exactly like me, but there's elements of myself in her. And perhaps she's got other qualities I wish I had. Or don't. Maybe she's reckless and I'm reserved. Whatever. It's fun to be able to explore a fantasy in this way.

It's a lot of fun, and I find this to be true for a lot of the stuff I've read as well. Some of it I keep in my drawers others I put our into the world

(Anonymous) 2023-04-16 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, people can and should write Mary Sue/self-insert fics, yup. But as soon as they post these fics on some website or other, they want others to read them and therefore should not complain if someone points out that the author's work is obnoxious crap.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-16 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Complaining about flamers is always okay. Those assholes need to learn how the backbutton works before they hurt themselves.

Nah, if someone doesn't like it they can back-button out and keep it to themselves. People writing self-insert stuff are not hurting anyone.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-16 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Just like Mary Sue/self-insert writers have the freedom to post what they like, you're free to not read them. Why go out of your way to read what you know you don't like and taking time to tell them what you don't like?

Everyone wants to be liked at least just a little/from time to time, and it's never fun to be told something a creator made is flawed. Even worse when the criticism isn't someone doing it in good faith.

You're free to disregard niceties to say what you want, but I have to ask those who don't like Mary Sue/self-insert fics, why are you taking time to interact with something you know you don't like? If you enjoy talking shit about Mary Sue/self-insert fics you have avenues to do your bitch sessions without publicly embarrassing someone.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-16 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
that's why there's an option to turn off comments baby ;)

(Anonymous) 2023-04-16 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not going to read them but will stick for people writing and posting them.

What does get annoying is people posting "hey, read my fic! read my fic!" on reddit or whatever. The urge to let them know that it's obviously a self-insert and nobody cares about your teenage OCs is strong. I do not, but I have the urge to.

They'll grow up a bit and cringe over this later, I'm sure.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-17 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
This, tbh. I'm so glad I never posted any of my self-insert stuff when I was a teenager because I look back on it now and realize that no one else would want to read what were basically my own personal fantasies. People who come to read fic about the canon characters aren't going to care about someone's self-insert, they want to read about the canon characters.

I don't care who writes what, just fucking tag it correctly so I can avoid it. Or find it, if that's my jam. Don't tag it with a canon pairing to "hook" people to read it, don't play coy in the summary, just be truthful.
