They're not great but they're not the worst stuff from that era and they do have a lot of cool dragons and stuff so. Eh.

Agreed. And honestly if they just leave out the plotline where dragonriders have to have sex while their dragons are having sex, other than that they are mostly fine. And that plot isn't really integral to things and would be easy to leave out of an adaption.

Right? The dragons can fly to mate and still decide the leadership without adding that other repugnant stuff.

OP, I would love a series. The world-building was fascinating. Plus, dragons.

I think it wouldn't take much revision to make an utterly fantastic TV series. Just take out the homophobia and her weird anti-pet stance.

It could be un-problematic-ified pretty easily and you could do CG dragons on a TV budget now. I would be all for this!

Genuinely I'm surprised nobody has tried to walk into a meeting room somewhere and pitch it as "Outlander meets Game of Thrones"

(Anonymous) 2023-04-18 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
There's been several attempts at making it that have been stalled in the very early stages so I would suspect that the rights are currently tied up somewhere.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-18 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah but that's been years ago

(Anonymous) 2023-04-18 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but someone could have tied up those rights for 25 years or more.

God, I would fucking love a Pern screen adaptation done with as much love as Dinotopia. I’ve never gotten past All the Weyrs of Pern but those first few trilogies are so fuckin good. I still get feelings about Moreta.

Moreta was *amazing*.

You know, after writing for Star Trek: TNG, DS9 and Voyager, and before Battlestar Galactica, Ronald D. Moore developed a pilot for The WB, had it cast, and was a few days from filming, but The WB made changes, apparently wanting it more like Buffy, and he didn't want that so it fell apart. This was in 2002, so if it had actually happened, it might still be running, given how many books are in the series. I have no idea who was cast, but I really wonder.

The CGI budget would be...a lot. Unlike Game of Thrones, where they could get away with one dragon scene an episode at most, the main draw of Perm IS the dragons.
Even a Harper Hall focus wouldn't help, because of Menolly's flock of fire lizards.

All that being said, completely agreed, OP. I know it would be a pain in the ass but I /want/ it.

I would love to see an animated Pern series developed along the lines of Gargoyles and targeting a slightly older audience.

I'm not sure about a television series (maybe a miniseries...) but I'd watch a film or several films.
