Uh, how is OP doing "the exact same thing"? What are they holding hostage? They're not withholding chapters. They're finishing the fic, but not marking it as complete. The whole fic is there and available to those who want to read it. Is this a reading comprehension issue on your part, maybe?

Are you kidding me? They literally JUST SAID that they were knowingly, expressly choosing to do something that would almost certainly make sure a certain segment of the readership would NOT have access to the story because there wasn't enough engagement. The only way this would be clearer is if the people back in the day also said that not only are they NOT updating the next chapter until they hit the required number of comments but their friends have all already read it.

They still have access! The fic is there! Right there!

They're just not getting their dainty little hands held telling them they can now look at it with the least inconvenience to themselves. Geebus. How entitled can you get?

OK, I think you're not understanding what's going on here, so I'll break it down for you.

There are some people who only like to read WIP. Because they don't have the time to follow a WIP, because they don't want to get invested only for it to not get finished, because they don't like cliffhangers, because they're entitled (??????). Whatever. There is a certain percentage of the readership that does this.

OP is saying that those people never comment on their fic. OP says they get no engagement from that readership. OP has assumed that the hits mean that people are reading the whole fic, enjoying the fic, and deciding not to comment because they're "assholes" and "leeches" and "can choke on it". OP has decided that if people aren't going to engage with their fic the way OP wants, OP is going to make sure that Those People don't see their fic by incorrectly labeling it in the archive.

But yes, it's the readers that are acting entitled by... filtering to read the fics that they want?(??????)

In any event, OP is the one taking action to lie to people because they're upset at their own assumptions and made themselves mad. "People aren't doing what I want, so I'm going to withhold something that I think they like."

Sorry, should be "don't like to read WIP"

Well, OP is saying that writing without feedback as they go is exhausting.

And it *is* exhausting. I know that. Everyone who writes long-fic knows that.

Adjusting how people who don't like WIPs - and therefore will never give the feedback that will make the OP less exhausted - can engage with their work is... it's not the flounce you seem to think it is.

It's your choice to filter out WIPs. The work is still there.

Sure, I'm not arguing that they HAVE to mark their stuff as complete. It's their fic, they can do what they want within the scope of the AO3 terms of service. But blaming other people for not "paying" for the fic in engagement and calling them names because OP fundamentally misunderstands the metrics is an asshole move.
