(Anonymous) 2023-04-19 07:58 am (UTC)(link)But as it is, my ship of choice averages a new fic every 2-3 months. Not only do I not mind not getting a completed story, I can't afford to not read WIPS in that kind of economy.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-19 09:36 am (UTC)(link)Which is also why I generally put zero weight on the hit counter on ao3. That number means nothing, because someone can open a fic, see it's not for them, and back out, which is entirely valid. And also the reason why I literally never even look at the hit counter on my own fics-- Again, it's a wholly meaningless number imo.
But coming back to the topic of WIPs... Since I am so picky with what fics I read, if I find a writer whose story I liked and who has multiple works in my fandom you can bet your bottom I will go and read their WIPs, even if they were last updated five years prior.
And like, on the one hand I understand the frustration of a truncated story: I'd be a liar if I said that I'd never reacted with a pained 'nnnooooo!!!' when reaching the end of a WIP, lmao. But on the other hand if the fic had been great up to that point I've still gained some enjoyment out of it, I still got to partake in that creativity that also feeds mine. That's why I simply cannot understand people who avoid WIPs like the plague, because like... You're still missing on some potentially great stuff? That's still some creativity and love and effort you are purposefully cutting yourself out of just because, what, you just cannot bear the idea of a story without an end?
Like to each their own, and again, idk if it's because I also write/draw/what have you, and being inspired by other's works is just part of daily life for me, but I literally cannot wrap my head around hating WIPs to this degree. But I guess that's my own problem at the end of the day, lol
