(Anonymous) 2023-04-19 11:58 am (UTC)(link)All AYRT did was illustrate the different ways some writers complain about the comments they get or the lack-thereof, without actually insulting anyone or telling someone to choke on it. They even say that they at least want to have some way to get across that they like the stories despite the fact that they’re intimidated by some authors, and despite the fact that they know kudos aren’t always considered enough for some people, they want to give some kind of mark of positive feelings for the fic.
The fact that you’re acting like they said something bad just because you might not have had the same experiences as them, or even acting like they’re just as bad as someone insulting people for petty reasons, is disingenuous. It feels like you’re OP, or the anon who’s been defending them all throughout the thread, acting like they’re justified in insulting people for not commenting the way they want. It’s asinine. The secret from a few days ago about quitting fic, at least as far as putting it out there, because of lack of engagement was far more understandable. There wasn’t any baseless petty insults, first off. And second, they got their point across while being in a situation where they’re not getting any engagements, not just not getting comments the exact way they want and demand.
And just for reference, my experience with writers doesn’t line up with AYRT’s 1:1. I’ve encountered much more writers who respond to comments just happy to talk to readers and get feedback. Just like I am when I respond to comments on my fic. But there are writers that do exactly the things AYRT talks about, even if they’re not everywhere in my experience. This community has had at least a dozen secrets of authors complaining about the comments they get not being exactly how they want them to be before the OP of this secret, and they sounded just like AYRT describes. To pretend this doesn’t exist, and that AYRT is somehow being as rude as OP to talk about it, doesn’t feel like it’s coming from a place of good faith on your part.
