The Mal/Alina dynamic on paper should be one I adore, it's my jam. Except onscreen he's just so...dull. And imho not attractive the way Kirigan is. And I just don't see any chemistry. But I figure she'll end up with Mal anyway *le sigh*
For ~reasons I've never watched Hunger Games but I know there was ship wars and I swear from what I've read I'd have been Team Gale but she ends up with the other guy.
I can think of other shows with this where I'd prefer Other Guy but the girl always end up with Mr Stability to become Mrs Stability, even where Other Guy was far more compatible and adventurous like she is.

She ends up with the other guy because Gale's bombs killed her sister. I don't think there's any resolving that.

RIGHT? Like, I can get being Team Gale before that happens, even though I never was (Katniss doesn't *need* another Katniss as a life partner, Gale doesn't actually offer her any balance, anything she isn't already, Peeta both has qualities and skills that are different from her and make them a balanced team AND has Same Trauma, the whole REASON she doesn't want to get married and have kids is that she can't imagine raising children in a world with Hunger Games, not that she is inherently child free, stability and peace is very much the future she would want if she could have envisioned it for herself... like, as a child free reader, I get wanting rep, but Katniss is not it?)...

But after Gale's actions kill Prim, Katniss' entire reason for everything, the one person she feels total unconditional love for from the start? Remaining on Team Gale is just incomprehensible to me.

NA - I was never in the Hunger Games fandom and never really full-on shipped any HG pairings, but yes! Fucking THIS, 100%.

Especially the Katniss doesn't need another Katniss, thing. Like, maybe it's that I'm someone who has felt disempowered and angry for a lot of my life, because even though I don't really relate to Katniss all that much, I totally understand her recognition that what she needs it not someone who will double down on the anger and alienation she already feels, but someone who will help her back away from that edge and focus on new growth. Like, I don't even have anything against Gale. His rage and his radicalization was completely understandable. But if Katniss had thrown in with him, it would've destroyed them both before too long.

Team Gale fans argue that Collins only had Gale's bomb kill Prim for a tidy way to give Katniss a good reason not to pick him. I think that very well may be true, so I can see why they don't like that being used as an argument.

But I also think that even if Gale hadn't done that, she'd still have plenty of good reasons (articulated in this thread already) to choose Peeta instead.

I mean, Gale doesn't, he creates a device that is a bomb, and then its used in a way he doesn't intend, whose collateral damage is Prim. Katniss knows this, and her anger at Gale is personal, yes, but ultimately a resolution of their philosophical differences (as demonstrated by her choice to kill Coin). Katniss simply doesn't want more war, or its devices, and Gale wants to make sure no one can ever hurt him again, despite the consequences to him personally or ethically. Peeta in a real way, both for himself after he is brainwashed, and for other, fights, but for peace, which ultimately is what Katniss wants.

I love the Gale/Katniss/Peeta triangle.

I feel you on a lot of that-- Mal/Alina have the childhood friends to lovers thing and the dogged devotion that is absolutely my JAM, and I do think TV Mal has his moments, but I'm pretty much just watching for the Crows because I can't actually get into Mal/Alina or their whole storyline.

I don't find the Darkling attractive, though. Like... he's just got such a rancid personality that he doesn't even appeal to the villainfucker in me. I'd have to see the actor in something else to know if I would find him hot in another role or if he just doesn't do it for me-- I know he's done some other things, I just can't recall seeing them.

I think Mr. Stability is often the more compatible choice for action girl, though-- I just think she shouldn't have to become Mrs. Stability when they get together. I want to see more badass action ladies who have stable, domestic husbands that they have to be the strong, protective one over. Let Mr. Stability do her laundry while she handles dangers!

I don't ship Mal/Alina or Kirigan/Alina because I find them both kinda dull in their own respects but +100 on Mal sadly being unfortunately boring. Like insofar as him as a romantic prospect he's fine and 100% someone to pick irl, but for fiction he's just not very a interesting character and that's a shame because to me he is the better choice for Alina as he actually cares about her. But the writing doesn't really try with him sadly so it ends up making Kirgian a more interesting scene partner for her even though I really detest how he treats her.
