Same. I really enjoyed the show, but I stick to non-explicit art and fic for this fandom.

I get it. I like them, though. To me, they're like -- cute family friend couple. Not hot, per se, but cute. The sticking point for me and watching the series was second-hand embarrassment/anxiety over Stede's everything.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-20 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
fortunately you can watch a show without participating in its fandom.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-20 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
This is such a spot-on description of their energy, LOL.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-20 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Same. But also, the show and relationship were just too...something. I was rooting for them, but I also think of them as a very nonsexual couple. In the sense that I don't want to think of them sexually, not like that I think they're asexual or anything. Words are failing me tonight.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-20 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, same. Like, I ship them and I like them together and I want them to be happy, but at the same time I definitely do not want to think about them having sex even though I want them to have sex!

(Anonymous) 2023-04-20 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Major gay uncles vibes.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-20 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Nayrt but lol

(Anonymous) 2023-04-20 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
NA - Yup, this is it, this is exactly how I feel about them. XD

(Anonymous) 2023-04-20 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
I said it in a thread, but this is the major case of a show there I've been ignoring fandom. I am not interested.
And I don't really understand why you choose not to watch something enjoyable just because you don't want major characters to fuck.

OP

1) Because there are a lot of enjoyable shows out there, but I also find fandom enjoyable too and am usually on the look out for a new source of fic. So sometimes I budget my time for shows that might get me a fandom out of it.

2) Also because frankly, OFMD appeals more because of the fandom than the concept. My overall impression watching the trailers was that it would be twee and intentionally cringe but not quite funny enough to be truly likeable as a standalone show for me. I actually watched the first episode after I made this secret and that largely held true (once again, for my tastes). I think I'll probably try the rest of it eventually, but I was not grabbed by the content alone.

NAYRT but this is actually really interesting because it's something where the experience of watching the show has radically changed since S1 ended

If you started watching it while it was airing, you did so because it was a sort of twee dark comedy about pirates with some shippiness and stuff... and then the pirates actually kissed when no one really expected them to

But I think that probably is the most rewarding way to approach it - as a quirky comedy first, and a shippy fandom show second - so basically long story short I think you are making the right call and I support you

OP

Thank you for supporting me NAYRT!

(Anonymous) 2023-04-20 09:53 am (UTC)(link)
Ayrt. Fair!
Yeah, and it IS cringe comedy, ngl. I think it's Taika's modus operandi
(still if you are interested in fandom experience I would recommend reading for other couples. There are a lot of them)

(Anonymous) 2023-04-20 10:42 am (UTC)(link)
OP

See, I loved Thor 3 and also loved Flight of the Conchords w/ Rhys Darby which is why I thought I'd love this. But I think the comedy is just not as on point for me.

I will see if any other couples appeal as I slowly make my way through it! (Though I won't make any promises because I am a basic bitch who is a slut for juggernaut ships)

New anon here - I love the show, have absolutely zero interest in the fandom. I would say if you were really interested give it a few episodes. The first episode didn't really hook me, but I love a lot of the people involved in the show so I stuck with it and I was not disappointed. There are scenes that I will rewatch and just collapse giggling at. In fact this whole thread has made me want to do a total rewatch, so thanks for the weekend plans! Lol

Understandable!
This secret reminded me that this is a funny and enjoyable show (Nigerian prince joke is absolutely hysterical. Also I still can't get over how funny costumes are), so I am being a bit on an advertising horse. Ironically I really don't like fandom and I've been ignoring it from the start :D

(Anonymous) 2023-04-20 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
There's lots of fun fic that's not explicit! You can just imagine them having fun pirate adventures and being in love!

(Anonymous) 2023-04-20 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
OK but Taika IS really hot all in black leather though.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-20 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
To you. To others, “leather daddy who is also actually a dad” isn’t the vibe they’re into.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-20 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Ed Teach doesn't have any kids on the show. Whether the actor does or not is irrelevant, it's all about the characters. (Also he's younger than me, lol)

(Anonymous) 2023-04-20 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
He’s not your dad, so you can list over leather daddy dad vibes all you want. It’s not a universal thirst, though.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-20 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Super late, but same. Love the show, love their relationship, but absolutely do not want to see anything sexual between them. It's super frustrating that in the fandom (at least the part of it I've experienced), if you say that you're a homophobe (even if you're also queer yourself). So annoying.
