I would say "shitheads" rather than "neckbeards", because some neckbeards can be quite nice.

But I 100% agree about WH and 40K fandom, because they're really interesting fictional worlds but the fandoms... the fandoms.... oh, boy, the fandoms.

I'm a guy, probably a neckbeard given my interests, but hard agree.

40k's fandom is just another level of educating yourself off memes and regurgitating them ad infinitum, losing track of satire and the fact humans are just as terrible as everyone else in the galaxy, obsessing over that singular faction, and see people unironically wishing things would be like that in real life.

One time I watched a 40k Lore video, YouTube then bombarded me with right wing and far right wing channels immediately after. It's the reason I use the "Not Interested" / "Don't Recommend Channel" options indiscriminately, as well as "Channel Blocker" and "uBlock" as indispensable tools.

I like connecting with people I already know that like this canon, but I am not interested in the wider fandom.

I feel that third paragraph, although in my case it's more general gaming or crypto videos where this happens.

I've heard the groups focused around painting your own figures can be chill and supportive. The 'Thin your paints, paint two coats' kind of places. Maybe you could make a friend or two there?

I think the lore is hilarious and I've got some friends who really like 40k but I don't have the energy or cash to get involved.

idk this is my main fandom and has been for a little over a year and I've been pretty lucky at avoiding the neckbeard parts of fandom. I don't actually play the game tho; I just read the novels and collect/paint the minis.

The Warhammer 40k fandom on tumblr is okay! Definitely some people talking about lore, people shipping (and conversely some people being kind of hateful about shipping), and people showing off minis. There's also a discord server, altho I'll be honest, I have that muted most of the time.

On reddit, both 40kLore and sigmarxism are pretty great, altho the second sometimes gets to be a bit much for me.

I have avoided this fandom for 20+ years after seeing which asshole dudes were into it (and what they got out of it). But there's definitely fans who are funny and awesome and not white nationalist fascists. There's a regular thread on [community profile] fail_fandomanon and the tumblr side of things is more fun.
