As a writer, I love when regular commenters comment on every chapter. And uh, I have never made friends from an AO3 comment thread, and I've been uploading fics there from the beginning. Perhaps I'm doing it wrong, but the comment conversations seem to end pretty quickly.

Saaame. Like, I'm friendly in my responses to my commenters but we're not actually friends?

I have made friends in AO3 comment sections!

This. I mean, I've made friends with people who regularly commented on my fanfic back in the day, but it's not a given that this will happen and it seems funny that OP might be strategizing their comments to AVOID accidental (??) fandom friendships. I don't think that's a thing. Tons of people leave a comment (even a long, thoughtful comment!) and then go on their merry way, and that's it.

I've only made one friend through AO3 comments over the years. Awkwardly enough, it started because they got upset about a plot element that they misunderstood/misread, and when I explained, they felt really bad, and we just kept talking. But hey, new friend!
