Oh noez. Someone said something nice that they're sure will be true in the future even if it's not accurate now! (Your hair is gonna look so great!) What a dick, to say something nice to someone....

I mean. The point of my original comment is that "I'm sure I will love reading this when it's done, it's always great to see a new chapter" is a fine comment. You're allowed to say "I'm sure I will love it in the future". That was my actual point?

I mean, being a dick isn't the end of the world, but there is no actual need to lie there, and they said in the secret they aren't doing it to be nice, they're cynically doing it just to get more fic. They can just tell the truth! That would also work to encourage the author! No need to be a dick about it, everybody wins!

They're a dick for saying "I read this and enjoyed it" on every chapter when they in fact did not read *or* enjoy *any* chapters, just to manipulate the author. Don't bald-facedly lie in your comments just to manipulate people, and you won't be a dick.

My point is that your point is a very weird line to draw between acceptable behavior and being a dick. Writers say that comments encourage them to write. OP is writing a comment with the explicit intention of encouraging them to write. What does it matter what the actual comment is? Why would THAT make them manipulative and a dick? OP is doing exactly what authors say they want in a way that OP feels comfortable doing. Everyone already wins! Except for OP who is being called a dick for doing as asked.

Oh. You’re one of those thought crimes are real people.

Okay, so outside of the crazy part of the internet and certain churches, doing a good thing for a selfish reason isn’t actually bad. Writers who want positive comments got positive comments. You can insist that the comments are tainted because the commenter wasn’t pure all you want, but that’s a you thing.
