I'd watch it if it were the man who had fertility problems. I wouldn't watch it otherwise.

The details never get discussed in that depth, but I assume the mention of repeated IVF treatments are about Martha's fertility issues. Since making the secret, I've finished the series and have a lot of mixed feelings. On the one hand, yay for a frank discussion from Humphrey's side of how he feels about not having kids, but I'm not sure the show really explored Martha's ambivalence enough.

It focused mostly on her guilt and self-sacrifice, and coming from a female character, that leaves a bad taste in my mouth because it's so cliche. I would've liked to see her admit that she doesn't have a strong desire for kids herself, and that maybe wanting them for Humphrey's sake isn't very healthy for their longterm relationship or her mental health, and that it's FINE to not want children and also FINE to not want to be noble and put herself through multiple rounds of IVF and miscarriage(s) in pursuit of this goal? IDK. Lots of feelings, like I said.

Yeah, this whole aspect of the show felt both unnecessary and poorly handled. IMHO, it took up too much time in a show that I wanted to be more about the crime solving and Humphrey getting to know his new colleagues… and yet didn’t take enough time to actually explore the complexities of the issue.

I’m glad the finale seems to imply that this storyline won’t be a big deal in any future episodes.

Agreed. Just a bad choice in general. I was honestly surprised they went there because it seems like a very depressing, emotionally loaded choice for what's set up to be a light hearted detective show and it's not like they had many episodes to work through it. I would've much rather gotten to know the other new characters and/or the village instead.

I agree completely.
I'd have enjoyed the show more if he were single or they were not having children. It never felt right that they hadn't married and were happy to get into debt and put Martha through IVF over and over. Maybe so she could just walk away, easier than getting a divorce. I want Humphrey to prove he loves her and she's enough by finally marrying her.
I really enjoyed the twisted plots and the other characters and the scenery. More Selwyn the seagull and less moping about babies and the show's near perfect.
