(Anonymous) 2023-04-21 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)I love this secret, even if it's possibily from a troll. But I've seen this idea thrown around in other internet spaces, especially last year at the beginning of the war. SO YEAAAH, there are people who legitimately think this. I've heard this kind of stuff IRL, too! (not sure about the Floridans and Texans tho)
I'm an european that has been studying Russian on and off for years because I love Russian music and I would like to go there to attend a concert... in the future, if possible (crying).
Last year in my language learning forum we had an influx of people coming in and insulting us because we were "learning the language of the oppressor" and yeah, sure, language can be a cultural tool to subject other people and erase history and ethnicities (Russia in Ukraine does this), but I prefer to think about it as a tool to build bridges, especially if that language is not imposed to me (my case, I don't live near Russia rn) and I'm learning it because I want to enjoy another culture.
So yeah. There was that, last year. Also, a lot of events held in my country that staged Russian artists were cancelled as a punishment to Putin's act of war. And museums, movie festivals etc. All cancelled for a few months.
Because IDK I guess you win the war by completely ignoring other people's cultures and vilifying ordinary people living in Russia (people that could be actively protesting on Russian street or outiside its borders) paiting them all as Putin's minions?
I honestly don't get this. But honestly it could be that I'm not the brightest person around.
For example: my country is one of those western European country very actively against LGBTQ+ people. So... what about me? Am I not allowed in LGBTQ+ online spaces and in fandom because the people in my government are oppressing that minority?
And what if I tell you... that I am GAY, a genderqueer lesbian. And that I am oppressed in my own country? So...? MMMH?
Do you want to cut me off the internet, too? I didn't choose to be born here or even live here ATM. Sure, I can move out, and I'll probably do so in the future (I'm lucky enough I can do that), but right now?
You want to cut me and other people in my position off the internet just because I am living here and not actively going to the parliament and IDK punch the people in power in the face, I suppose? People here voted for these people. I'm surrounded by people who don't accept "my lifestyle", as they call it.
What do I have to do to get the right to be on the internet and in fandom spaces, same as you?
How is my position any different that the oppressed people in Russia or under any other bigotted democracy?
Please explain it to me so I can understand.

FWIW I know a few people in Russia and they are risking their lives to protest the war. Respect to them and all the queer folks like you who have to live under repressive regimes. I hope you stay safe.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-21 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)You're right, though. People are people and should be held to personal standards, not because of where they live, because the last 5-6 years have demonstrated that you can't just pick up and leave no matter how much you hate where you are. No matter how much you want to, in some cases, the law and the economy are against you. No, Americans can't just leave the US when they want. Canadians and Australians can't just move. People in Europe, Asia, and most other countries can't just change to a new country or even a different county/district/prefecture when theirs is shit. All you can do is not crap on people for where they're stuck living.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-22 11:33 am (UTC)(link)From what little I have been able to gather via wikipedia, news articles, and the Italian soap opera - Un posto al Sole - ; well, the Italian position on queer matters is pretty odd.
Further complicating matters is that Italy has a bajillion different ways of communicating very basic ideas via dialect, religion, and multicultural plurality. So, unfortunately, there are all of these ideas afoot, and very little agreement on how to reconcile them all.
I also haven't visited Italy in years. I don't know what's going on there unless I listen to the news via internet radio or something.
