I have Russian friends that have literally been protesting against Putin since LJ was the place to be (and they were organizing it on LJ, let that sink in for a moment.) I wouldn't want to be part of any fandom that boots them out because they had the bad luck of being born in a country run by an asshole dictator.

Three thoughts:

1) This is just xenophobia with extra steps.

2) Fandom folks living under shitty governments need a fandom escape even more than the rest of us.

3) People lie on the internet. If someone is a shitty Desantis supporter and you block Floridians they'll just say they're from PR or GA and be shitty. You can only judge people by what they say/do and how they treat others. I'll block a British terf or a Washington white supremacist before I block a Texan who's cool. (And I fucking hate Texans. They keep moving here and raising our housing prices and driving badly. grumble grumble grumble.)

HERE IT IS! /starts munching popcorns

I love this secret, even if it's possibily from a troll. But I've seen this idea thrown around in other internet spaces, especially last year at the beginning of the war. SO YEAAAH, there are people who legitimately think this. I've heard this kind of stuff IRL, too! (not sure about the Floridans and Texans tho)

I'm an european that has been studying Russian on and off for years because I love Russian music and I would like to go there to attend a concert... in the future, if possible (crying).
Last year in my language learning forum we had an influx of people coming in and insulting us because we were "learning the language of the oppressor" and yeah, sure, language can be a cultural tool to subject other people and erase history and ethnicities (Russia in Ukraine does this), but I prefer to think about it as a tool to build bridges, especially if that language is not imposed to me (my case, I don't live near Russia rn) and I'm learning it because I want to enjoy another culture.

So yeah. There was that, last year. Also, a lot of events held in my country that staged Russian artists were cancelled as a punishment to Putin's act of war. And museums, movie festivals etc. All cancelled for a few months.
Because IDK I guess you win the war by completely ignoring other people's cultures and vilifying ordinary people living in Russia (people that could be actively protesting on Russian street or outiside its borders) paiting them all as Putin's minions?

I honestly don't get this. But honestly it could be that I'm not the brightest person around.

For example: my country is one of those western European country very actively against LGBTQ+ people. So... what about me? Am I not allowed in LGBTQ+ online spaces and in fandom because the people in my government are oppressing that minority?
And what if I tell you... that I am GAY, a genderqueer lesbian. And that I am oppressed in my own country? So...? MMMH?
Do you want to cut me off the internet, too? I didn't choose to be born here or even live here ATM. Sure, I can move out, and I'll probably do so in the future (I'm lucky enough I can do that), but right now?
You want to cut me and other people in my position off the internet just because I am living here and not actively going to the parliament and IDK punch the people in power in the face, I suppose? People here voted for these people. I'm surrounded by people who don't accept "my lifestyle", as they call it.
What do I have to do to get the right to be on the internet and in fandom spaces, same as you?

How is my position any different that the oppressed people in Russia or under any other bigotted democracy?
Please explain it to me so I can understand.

I'm from Florida and I keep volunteering, donating to the 'goods' and voting against all the POSes. Unfortunately, most of the people here who vote are old and they still outnumber me. Oh, and all the bigots from other places who all moved here to be close to Tr*mp and prop up DeSatan.

What more would you have me do, OP?

(Anonymous) 2023-04-21 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi there troll. In case this isn't one: Hi there, asshole.
How can you be so fucking disconnected from any news that you kinda sorta missed the whole "openly protesting Putin will get you potentially arrested or killed" thing?
And I hope you remove yourself from fandom as well considering the US happily voted for Trump and you didn't do anything against him.

If only moving a country or state away was something everyone could afford to do--not to mention those living in those places and risking their lives to protest / stand with LGBTQ+ individuals / etc.

I've seen some terrible hot takes, but this one... I think people who believe the same as the secret holder should be booted from fandom spaces so the rest of us never have to encounter their bigotry-masked-as-activism.

As a once Floridian, I'm cool with ragging on Floridians. Some of them really truly deserve it. Likewise, a lot of celebrities/content creators from Florida have no traits that balance out their willful ignorance and shunning of critical thinking.

But, um, I feel like applying this logic to Texans is a stretch. Some really solid content creators are Texas residents and likely have Texas residents in their fanbases. There's a bit more hope for at least pockets of critical thinking from the Texas side of things. Why not attempt to cut them some slack?

(Anonymous) 2023-04-21 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you trolling? A child who knows nothing about the world yet?

Considering queer Russians can hardly exist in real life spaces and live in real terror while going to their jobs, their schools, etc, the LAST thing I want to do is kick them from the online spaces they are able to access. Shit, if my friend there went radio silent for too long, the FEAR it'd put into me.

It's not so simple to just 'do something' about a violent dictator, certainly not something that the most marginalized and endangered people can just do.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-21 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
This feels like a troll secret, but if it isn't: the populace of a country is not it's government and isn't responsible for the shitty things it does, this goes double for the countries that have totalitarian regimes where the populace can't vote and don't get a choice about who runs their country.

The people who suffer the most under shitty governments are the populace under that government.

what is the lower limit of hell a government can unleash on other people to warrant eviction of that nationality from fandom spaces? like what's the line here? like is this philosophically coherent policy or reactionary?

i just don't feel like this way about global forums (somewhat self-interestedly) but i feel for moderators, that's all i'll say.

Didn't the ex French President Hollande (spelling?) admited to pranksters on a video call that they organised the coup in the Ukraine in the 2014? I saw it on Dore show. So Ukraine is not a democracy. It has a dictator at the helm currently and bans the male half of the population from leaving the country. Do we ban Ukrainians from fandom spaces?

I bet OP was hating on Chinese during the early Covid times.

Oh yeah ban young people in Florida and Texas from fandom spaces where they could actually get outside views and break out of the echo chamber they may be raised in, great idea!/s

Let me tell you something OP . Both myself and someone close to me growing up in 90s/2000s North Carolina and Texas respectively , started out believing some of the toxic stuff and misinformation in communities we were raised in. You know how we eventually broke out of it?

Interacting with people outside our bubble while in online fandom spaces . We talked to other people , got to hear other view points and even corrections of misinformation we were taught. It made us grow out of being in that.

I can't tell you what might have happened to my younger post high school legalistically Christian and silently homophobic self hadn't had Internet interaction to break me out of beliefs I held when I started to question my own sexuality.

Knowing how I reacted to other upheavals and stressors? It wouldn't have been pretty .

Honestly, troll or not, fuck you.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-22 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
hah, an interesting secret for me, a russian citizen in eng-fandom, to read. I wish I had a luxury of thinking it's a troll secret, but AO3 literally got banned in Russia the other day because some ukranian ficwriter didn't like that there are fics in russian and reported it to the russian authorities, who were happy to oblige, so yeah...
I'm kinda glad to know most of the commenters see this secret as a bullshit take, and there are a lot of very good takes mixed with some bad ones in the comments.

don't wanna repeat all the good points ppl already made, but I'm surprised nobody mentioned one tiny fkn detail re:Putin's support. okay, two details.
first, those support ratings are skewed as fuck. there were a lot of rushed lawmaking recently to basically outlaw anyone not showing support to goverment/army/country in public. like, you can post on your blog that war is bad and can be charged and arrested and get either a costly fine that not a lot of ppl can afford or, worst case, 7-10 years in prison. or life in prison for sharing state secrets and the law is very vague what constitutes as a secret so like, for anything really, if they want to. obviously protesting is not safe, but uh, literally saying you're agains Putin in public is also not safe? the social surveys here are super-inaccurate because people are afraid to answer if they don't support war/Putin and just cancel the surveys.
second, russians in fandom are overwhelmingly a) ppl who know english (so they can read non-russian news) b) queer c) women or the mix of it. and you know who is overwhelmingly super against war, and donates to support Ukraine, and writes russian news in english to share, and protests, etc.? russian fandom ppl. like, I have russian fandom friends obviously, and I go to some russian fandom spaces that are still left, and I literally don't see fandom supporting the war. there are ofcource exceptions, like that one artist on twitter (she's a terf tho, so like, expected lol), but other russian fandom peeps would boot them in a heartbeat. we all hate it here and wish we could do more about it, but it is what it is. putting additional pressure on us would only make it more dificult for us to resist the regime and stay sane, because we're already under pressure. we have to live in the dictatorship, go to work and talk with the older coworkers and/or family that doesn't think our country is wrong, and we have to pretend that This Is Fine. to overthrow Putin you would have to put more pressure on the older russians who truly support him, because the young ones are already against him, but there's fewer of us than them. and very few older russians are in fandom. it will do mostly nothing. well, it could screw over some of us with worse mental health, and damage the morale overall, but I'm afraid, even if everyone does what OP wants, russian fandom wouldn't be able to overthrow Putin. sorry.

So many fans from Western countries criticize places like China and Russia while living in capitalist countries, it's ironic and absolutely lacks self awareness!
