I guess it's because I read a ton of mysteries and first person is extremely common in that genre, but I just don't understand the hatred for that pov. *shrugs*

I hear ya. I actually tend to prefer first person POV. Third person I feel like gives authors more chances to be lazy and tell not show.

AYRT-- I also find head-hopping, which can happen in third person, much more irritating than the flaws of first person. I get that good writers generally avoid it but when it does happen I find it dead annoying

Agreed. And it's great in mysteries to limit the information the audience gets about the crime and/or use an unreliable narrator to obscure what is or isn't known.

But it's fine in other genes too.
