I realized in my late teens that I was never going to be a decent fiction writer. That said, I've kept my notebooks with my stories, and no matter how crappy I know they are, if I randomly pick one up I'll be engrossed for hours.

I've published fics and I also have drawer fics I know I'll never post. I consider my drawer fics super self indulgent but I believe I free myself to be way more creative so I tend to be surprised by how much I'm enjoying the fic when I read my drawer fics after time away.

Do you OP. What you created was what you wanted and it's great that you create things that you want. I think writing is a personal endeavor, share what you want or don't.

I can understand that. I was reading one of my own fics yesterday, and thought: Hm, this could be better written... But it had the things I like in it and none of the things that really annoy me when I'm reading, so... yeah.

For me it's a classic Sturgeon's Law situation - sure, plenty of 1st person books are crap; plenty of books are crap period. I've never understood peoples' objections to 1st person at all.

Yeah, a higher percentage of 1st POV is crap compared to 3rd- limited or omniscient. It's REALLY hard to do 1st POV well. 2nd is RIGHT OUT.

I also dislike books written in first person. Granted, lots of third person is crap too but I think poor writing becomes more obvious in first person. “I said this, I did that” etc: everyone know what it sounds like in their own head. First person is the laziest POV and the hardest to do well.

Obviously there are amazing books written in first person. But you really have to have skill to give the narrator a distinct voice.

tbh one of my fav. fic series is in first person (it's a retelling of Hunger Games through mostly Haymitch's eyes--starting from his games through to the end of the series) but... honestly...

Most 1st person just. Don't work for me. People have to REALLY get the character voice down in order for it to work.

For me it depends on the target demographic. Usually I find the first person in books aimed to a mature audience OK. Sometimes even better than third person to deliver the narration.
Kazuo Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day is in first person and it's an amazing book. One of my favourite.
I've also recently read About My Daughter By Kim Hye-jin and Mieko Kawakami's Heaven and they were both in first person and good books.

But yeah, it doesn't work for me in YA books (I thinki the only one I could read in first person was the hunger games) and I can't stand it in Fanfiction.

Just last week I read a description of ALF on facebook that made it sound like ALF was a much darker show than it was!

Like "Gordon's boredom, depression, and survivor's guilt often gets him in trouble." So yeah a grimdark ALF reboot would work!
