Read any good books lately?

(Anonymous) 2023-04-24 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm in a reading slump. :(

The last book I read and enjoyed was The Cybernetic Tea Shop by Meredith Katz. Cute story about an asexual human falling in love with a robot that runs a tea shop. My main complaint was that it was too short!

I really enjoyed How To Sale A Haunted House by Grady Hendrix. Some balls to the walls crazy scenes.

Anxious People by Fredrik Backman is great if you are looking for non horror.

I'm about 2/3rds of the way through How to Sell a Haunted House right now. At about 80 pages I was like, "Man this was an overhyped book unless it improves soon." It improved lol.

'possessed squirrel nativity scene' was not what I thought would happen at any point of this book lmfao

I actually gave up on it for a couple of weeks because of how much I hated the brother. So glad I finished it.

TW suicide mention

I don't remember the context, but somebody on here replied to one of my comments and mentioned Hello Cruel World: 101 Alternatives to Suicide for Teens, Freaks, and Other Outlaws by Kate Bornstein a few months ago, and I'm almost done reading that. I don't know if I love it, but I am 32, and I do think it's really interesting and it has some tips I find useful. :)

Most recent thing I read (other than a couple of erotica ebooks) was Untethered Sky by Lee Fonda. I quite enjoyed it. A steampunk of sorts, plus an unusual mythic creature used (in this case a Roc), plus a well-written main character.

No, all garbage tbh. I'm sorry I bought those books.

I've been reading quite a few auto/biographies because my local library had a few new ones recently.
my 3 faves being:
It Takes Blood and Guts by Skin (lead singer of Skunk Anansie)
Confess by Rob Halford (lead singer of Judas Priest)
Tove Jansson Work and Love by Tuula Karjalainen (about the creator of the Moomins and her various art works with and without the Moomins)

Story-wise I really enjoyed the first two Becky Chamber books, starting with:
A Long Way to a Small and Angry Planet.

I'm starting on Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas and it seems promising so far.

You know I absolutely adored Psalm for the Wild Built by her, but I just cannot get into the other series. Makes me sad.

Ooh, that sounds interesting. I’ll have to check it out. I recently read When the Angels Left the Old Country by Sacha Lamb and I really enjoyed it. I actually finished it in one day because it was that good.

I just read 'Wool' by Hugh Howey. Post-apocalyptic kind of mystery kind of horror thing.
I enjoyed it a lot, even though I found some of his writing style choices a little labored. There are two more books in the series (Silo series), so that'll keep me going for another week or so.

I'm in the middle of Because Internet: Understanding the New Rules of Language by Gretchen McCulloch. It's a super fun read.

Oh, I read that one a couple years ago and loved it. Delightfully nerdy.

Maybe check out The Sum Of Its Parts series by E.M. Holloway.

Its so good. Its basically a modern day urban fantasy series. The main couple are a bisexual guy and asexual guy (who is also a werewolf). They are so cute and such a great relationship. Also love just the friend dynamics in the series too. Also tends to veer more into mysteries that the main lead has to figure out with the help of his pack.

I read the Captive Prince trilogy, and really enjoyed it. Never in my life have I read a book that required me to trust the process quite so hard and then rewarded that trust quite so thoroughly. By which I mean, the first one had me squicked as hell (noncon and slavery dynamics are very much Not My Kink), but man, I have to hand it to Pacat, she played the long game and she played it well. Everything I disliked from book one ended up contributing to making book two and three more engaging and rewarding.

Not like they were the best books I've ever read or anything, but certainly a fun, well-written indulgence. I would describe the series as reading "like fanfic" mostly in all the good ways, while still having solid enough plot, characterization, and world-building to hold its own as original fiction.

I really enjoyed the Captive Prince trilogy when I read it. Hard agree that the first one is tough to get through and I probably wouldn't have continued if it hadn't ended on a cliffhanger (or it had a preview in the back that did). The second book was my favorite.

I really enjoyed "Song of silver, flame like night" and am still on "A Day of Fallen Night"
