Yeah, Harrison Ford agreeing to appear in the first Star Wars sequel but only if his character was killed off did not set a good precedent.

Also my heart is still broken.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-28 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
Ditto this. It put me off watching the rest of the series.

That one I can actually forgive, Ford had always made no secret about wanting to move on from the role and almost hating how it defined and limited his career.

+1

As shocking as it was the first time I saw it, I can forgive that one since Ford made no secret of his animosity towards Star Wars.

... The Last Jedi kill-them-all thing, though? Yeah. Yeah, I cannot think what kind of reasonable expanded universe writer would think it's a good idea to kill so many classic characters unceremoniously. Unless the head writer is a narcissist.

fucking lmao

literally before I even opened this post I said to myself "I am 100% confident that someone is going to find a way to say that Han Solo getting killed in TFA was actually fine (even though it's clearly an example of what the original secret was talking about) and TLJ was the one movie that ruined everything"

fucking of course call me fucking Nostradamus or something

I don't know, it depends. Sometimes it works and/or is appropriate. Passing the baton off to the next generation while giving a respectful send off to the ones who came before.

I'm trying to think of examples of this and just coming up blank. Anyone want to help an anon out?

There was that Spider-Man series of comics where the villain killed a whole bunch of A.U. Spider-Men: https://crustula.com/2014/11/12/holy-crap-marvel-has-killed-the-hostess-spokesman-spider-man/

Especially mean spirited when it involved the deaths of the Spider-Friends, just because Marvel didn't have the rights to the cartoon at the time.

21 Jump Street pretty immediately came to mind.
Fright Night (2011)
Star Trek (2009) maybe weirdly counts - Wil Wheaton voices some of the Romulan crew
Get Smart

An anon here was describing the teen wolf movie as a case of fanspite - killing off Stiles and Derek I believe?

(Anonymous) 2023-04-28 10:53 am (UTC)(link)
Zack Snyder went out of his way to say one of the characters he casually offed in Man of Steel was Jimmy Olsen and called it a nice little easter egg for the fans. Proving that Snyder has zero ability to understand Superman and Superman fandom.

Yeah, I agree with this.

I mean, I really enjoyed both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, but if there's one piece of criticism for those movies that I can totally empathize with, it's the way they handled Luke and Han. It didn't really bother me, because I honestly don't give a shit about the original trilogy, but if I was a fan of the original trilogy then the way those characters were handled would have been hugely disappointing to me, no doubt about it.

I use the term "fan disservice" to describe these situations.
