PotO comment OP here and I actually didn't see this last night, either, heh.

But yeah, I started drifting away from the fandom when the 2004 movie came out, and went off to explore other fandoms when LND actually got sort of popular and started showing up in fic, because ugh. The news of NY closing dragged me back in.

The original staging of the show is still amazing and I'm sad the only replica productions running rn are I think Korea and an upcoming one in China.

Despite being a PotO fan since 1995, I dunno that I've ever seen a print zine in person, although there were some geocities and angelfire sites with transcribed zine fic, I think. And I never got into mailing lists, either.

My first exposure to fic was from poking around webrings and small fansites, and later forums and ff.net.

There is well written fic out there, but even a lot of that isn't to my taste. 90% of the humor I see is lolrandom late 90s-early 2000s era, and there's not even much of that.

There's the "I did no research" fic, the "my doctoral thesis, let me show you it," fic, the "giggly teens time travel to the lair" fic, the "Erik is young, Scottish and has lovingly described chest-hair and rippling abs" fic, the "Erik is secretly an aristocrat (who outranks Raoul)" fic...

Then there's the "Christine returns to Erik post-musical in floods of tears for abandoning him when he never did anything really wrong and he magnanimously accepts her back," frequently paired with "Raoul revealed to be a drunken asshole," which got even more popular post-LND.

And there's the unsafe, insane, unconsensual BDSM fic, and the Erik the virgin sex god fic, and the "Christine lives in a city full of naked statues but doesn't know what a penis is" fic, and... yeah.

I know there's decent fic out there, but it seems more of a slog to find than in some of my other fandoms.

Maybe I'll put my renewed interest in PotO towards another cosplay outfit; I didn't have a spare $21,000 lying around for the Aminta dress that was just auctioned off for charity, but I do have a bolt of peach shot silk taffeta and maybe the sewing skills to pull it off; I've made the blue wishing dress and Christine's Elissa costume.

Would need to figure out how to do the embroidery; I can't by hand and my tiny poky 15 year old embroidery machine would choke to death if I didn't go insane trying to rehoop twice for every one of 200+ embroidered scallops. I wonder how much it would cost to commission someone with a better machine to embroider the yardage?
