maybe she keeps it short because of trauma.

I think it's a cute cut

This. Also, speaking as someone who had long hair for years and years and then finally got a pixie cut and it's so much easier to take take of omg and it looks so cute on me, maybe she likes it, funky ends and all.

I am happy to headcanon that years of magical super growth that c was abruptly stopped basically completely fucked up her normal hair growth, and it just doesn't grow anymore (or if it does it grows super slowly). And once she realised that she didn't want to cut her hair any shorter (and, as the user above said, trauma - focusing on the appearance of her hair in any way might bring her back to the time when she was only called for her hair)

Is her hair every a plot point again or do they just move on from the magical traumatic hair past?

The movie explicitly shows us that her non-magical hair doesn't grow, though. Remember, the bit that was cut when she was a baby? Unless she wants a pixie cut, that's her look forever now.

Yes! Thank you! Rapunzel explicitly told Eugene in the movie that it stops growing and turns brown once it's cut.
I remember vividly, because I didn't like how it implied that my brown hair was a lesser and dead version of blonde hair. (I had some self-esteem issues back then lol).

Well, I think her haircut and color is cute!

Brown hair is a very pretty colour, nonny, and you look lovely. I swear.

:( It sucks that's the message it sent to you, and I've heard other people interpret it the same way.

I think the idea was that brown was her natural colour (like her mother), and cutting it wasn't killing it, but removing the unnatural effect of the flower. Which is nice if you think of it as her becoming who she was supposed to be, being more like the mother she lost, etc. It's hard to get around the framing of 'brown hair means no magic or specialness,' though.

Huh, I guess I'm misremembering because I assumed she kept that streak of hair short to not mess with the look of her long hair.

That being said, even at the length it is there're ways to slick hair back that would have looked way more appropriate with that wedding dress.

It's so funny to me that your brain came up with that explanation. I guess Gothel could have made her appearance-conscious, but she has literally zero social life/awareness, it's hard to imagine her caring about her looks that much.

I 100% agree that it's not a good wedding look. Where's the elegance?? Plus it makes her look more childish, which is unnerving for a bride (even though she is still young and full of energy and optimism and the target audience is kids).

(Anonymous) 2023-05-02 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the movie was pretty explicit about her hair not growing anymore once it's cut. I do agree that they could have evened out the cut though.

Or she's very ill! My hair didn't grow for three years while I was very sick. Which was great because I didn't have to summon the energy to get it cut, but bad because it kept falling out at the normal rate (I had very thick hair to start with so it didn't become super noticeable unless you looked at an older photo of me).

I don't know, I think I like the fact that that cut is not conventionally flattering. i think that both makes sense for her character and also i don't think we should necessarily be saying that having flattering hair is important aesthetically. like of the beauty topics, hair is a fraught one we could unlearn some things about.
