Before Winter Soldier I did not care about Captain America or Steve Rogers at all. I found him kind of boring. But suddenly after that movie I have been ALL IN and then nothing but disappointed and then just irrationally PISSED at that ending.

This is literally me. Didn't like him at all but saw Winter Soldier in theaters and did a 180 on him.

The Winter Soldier continues to be one of the best (of not the best, or at least in the top 3) MCU films. It's a great standalone story but it also is one of the only movies that truly benefits from an understanding of and also builds on the previous movies in the franchise. And it of course at its core is built on great emotional drama (not just Steve/Bucky, the Black Panther intro is great too, as is the Steve/Nat/Sam friendship). Something that most of the other MCU films either fail at or aideline in favour of spectacle.

Like, I'm not saying it's the greatest film ever made. It's just a super solid movie for what it's trying to achieve.

And somehow the Russo brothers/ Feige just completely squandered that good will by not following through on Steve's character development in Endgame.

(Feige had previously let writers squander character development e.g. just ignoring Tony's addiction arc from IM3 in all subsequent movies, Whedon's weird Nat/Bruce stuff, anytime Loki appears. But screwing over Steve's arc where it concerned Bucky was just particularly egregious and didn't really make sense other than as a way to remove Cap from the franchise so they didn't have to exlain his absence or rehire Chris Evans)
