Yup. Right there with you.

Wait, didn't the MCU just end abruptly right in the middle of Tony's funeral? And there was no end to the film or content of any kind produced after that? I'm pretty sure that's right LALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU

Before Winter Soldier I did not care about Captain America or Steve Rogers at all. I found him kind of boring. But suddenly after that movie I have been ALL IN and then nothing but disappointed and then just irrationally PISSED at that ending.

This is literally me. Didn't like him at all but saw Winter Soldier in theaters and did a 180 on him.

The Winter Soldier continues to be one of the best (of not the best, or at least in the top 3) MCU films. It's a great standalone story but it also is one of the only movies that truly benefits from an understanding of and also builds on the previous movies in the franchise. And it of course at its core is built on great emotional drama (not just Steve/Bucky, the Black Panther intro is great too, as is the Steve/Nat/Sam friendship). Something that most of the other MCU films either fail at or aideline in favour of spectacle.

Like, I'm not saying it's the greatest film ever made. It's just a super solid movie for what it's trying to achieve.

And somehow the Russo brothers/ Feige just completely squandered that good will by not following through on Steve's character development in Endgame.

(Feige had previously let writers squander character development e.g. just ignoring Tony's addiction arc from IM3 in all subsequent movies, Whedon's weird Nat/Bruce stuff, anytime Loki appears. But screwing over Steve's arc where it concerned Bucky was just particularly egregious and didn't really make sense other than as a way to remove Cap from the franchise so they didn't have to exlain his absence or rehire Chris Evans)

Fucking This.
I hate it, loathe it, refuse to consider it canon. ARGH.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-02 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
You are not alone. I hated everything about his ending.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-02 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
It took me over a year to get back into this fandom because anytime I thought about it I was just full of rage. I still just check in every once and a while and can't stay for long.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-02 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
The one thing, the ONLY thing, I can say in it's favor is that it let's Chris Evans completely off the hook and keeps Seb Stan in the MCU stable without killing Cap. Because I really do think the directors love Steve and wanted to give him a happy ending.

But good lord they whiffed it. His ending is infuriating and incoherent.

What would I prefer, given the givens? Either he gives s goodbye speech to Sam&Bucky and then disappears into the timestream OR he's injured in the fight and is going to pretend to be dead to keep fighting the good fight without all the Captain America expectations weighing him down. And then we occasionally hear mentions that he's doing a sit-in for disability rights during FatWS.

FUCK IM STILL MAD D=

(Anonymous) 2023-05-02 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, I really like that injury and disability rights (and probably veterans' rights) ending. And he heals fast but he can't, say, grow back a limb. Good work!

(Anonymous) 2023-05-02 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you. He doesn't have to be on screen! He can be Over There, Doing Things!

In my heart of hearts, my absolutely ideal AU, he'd get de-serumed (by channeling power through mjolnir? IDK) and he'd walk off into the sunset to change the world that way. Blah blah blah full circle. Blah blah blah he's helped change the world enough that you don't need perfect muscles and super punches to change things. Blah blah blah he accepts his situation and doesn't even try to get re-serumed but he's 100% ready to throw! The! Fuck! Down! for justice. It's just that Sam and Bucky are going to run a full media blackout to keep him from jumping in-front of a bullet or whatever. And I think even Disney could take a pro-disability rights stance because then they don't have to talk about class. Or race. Or religion. Or worker's rights. Or sexuality. Or gender. Or really anything that would piss off a focus group or risk their corporate dominance.

Also they wouldn't even need Chris Evans as a body double!

But whatever. MCU doesn't know where he is. He could be on the moon, who cares. God. I used to love the MCU with an (honestly unhealthy) fervor. Now I'll see a fan theory on Reddit and I just. don't. care. Theorizing about the next movie? Who cares. The writers probably weren't allowed to see the previous one before they wrote this one. The actors don't know what's going on. The only way to enjoy them is to REFUSE to remember things.

Sorry I lost so many threads here I should take up cross stitch.

My headcanon was that Steve goes back in time, but in the process, he gets into a fight or something, gets fatally wounded, and barely makes it back to the original timeline, dying in front of his friends and allies. Bonus points: he bequeaths the shield to Sam as he breathes his last.

But yours might be better, especially given his background. One of the things I think people forget, is the reality that Steve grew up with. Back then, eugenics was a legitimate science, held in esteem by just about all educated people, including the doctors Steve went to when he was sick. In other words, preserum Steve would have grown up hearing about his inherent inferiority and how the world would be a better place without him in it.

There's no way that didn't affect him. It may be why Steve's such a rule-breaking little mothereffer in the first place; he has firsthand experience that the best and brightest, can be horribly horribly wrong. Ableism is something he's personally experienced, so having him become an advocate against it would make sense.

I am (perhaps weirdly) obsessed with Steve Rogers as a disability rights activist.

It's complicated, there's a lot to unpack, there's a lot of history, but I think it's a rich vein to mine.

(They just HAD to wrap everything up in a little bow because they clearly had NO IDEAS what would be coming next and they didn't want to commit to anything. ::RAGE::)

(Anonymous) 2023-05-02 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, a thousand times yes, I agree. I’m still mad about it.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-02 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't say I'm ANGRY, per se, because I just don't care about anything Marvel that much. But even as a casual moviegoer I thought damn, that was a shit ending. Bad enough that you Natasha barely gets an "oh yeah she dead" mention and we have a long emotional circlejerk about Tony, but... yeah.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-02 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
God that too. Would it have killed them to put up a second wreath at that service?

At least Nat got her own movie about how cool and smart and kind and pretty she is right after with a proper tombstone and a sister swearing revenge BUT STILL.

I know there are tons of people who love Tony, even today, but the movies doing this shit makes me dislike him out of resentment.

I feel like the entire franchise slowly turned into The Tony Stark Show. And it made me hate him so much.

I still find it very funny. mostly because I don't know where the disconnect happened, and it really feels like it was heteronormativity to me, like they thought this was fanservice like the rest of the movie, like the majority of fans were in it for Steve/Peggy, even though movie after movie they show his deepest emotional connection is to Bucky. so odd.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-02 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Right?! He didn’t get into a huge fight with Tony about Peggy, it was about Bucky! It’s like the writers and producers went in with blinders on about Steve and Tony and their adversarial relationship. Argh!
This stil drives me nuts.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-05 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Every since Winter Soldier supercharged the Steve/Bucky ship, the MCU has desperately, desperately tried to prove Steve's heterosexual. The fact that Bucky is named after a president widely suspected of being Gay and is played by an actor with a long history of playing tortured Gay boys probably doesn't help. :D
