I mean, it depends on the situation. I know absolutely nothing about the fandom here, but if it's got a large audience, it's a good idea to let *anyone* know when you're about to suddenly throw a spotlight on them, because having a spotlight thrown on you unexpectedly can be dangerous and/or lead to you doing stupid stuff that will reflect badly back on the people with the spotlight. (If they're doing it in a way that's reasonably anonymous... maybe, but it's hard to see how they could do that in this day and age.)

If it's got a very small audience... then they have just pissed of a significant fraction of their audience by ignoring their wishes, and that just seems like a bad choice.
