Maybe they mean it's to a lesser degree? Identifying yourself as a shipper tends to carry with it certain connotations about how hardcore into you are. I've watch plenty of media and see two people and think awww, how cute. Hope they get together eventually! But... that's it. I don't read or write any fic, I don't look for fanart or really give it much thought at all beyond that initial awwww reaction.
