I have the same problem with my youtube account, and I've even promoted my video in comments, posted it on my blog and livejournal and even posted it in my deviantart journal. So, what's the link to your deviantart account?

(Anonymous) 2009-06-05 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Posting a link right to my DA would also point out who I am here on LJ, so I'll say I commented on this picture recently. (http://ruby631.deviantart.com/art/There-s-an-investation-123499572)

It's very difficult to get going when you're a fan artist (or fan fiction writer). I used to care a lot about getting my artwork noticed. I'm not insanely good, and my drawing style leans more to realism than it does to anime/manga (not so great when you're mainly a manga/anime fan artist), but I found that if I went around and commented a lot/watched people, joined some fandom clubs and submitted lots, I made fandom friends.

It also helps a lot to illustrate fan fics that you enjoy. The authors LOVE IT when artists do that, and you can make friends that way too.

Good luck! ^^

(Anonymous) 2009-06-05 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Hm, yeah I never though about the fanfic illustration thing. That's a good idea.
(And my style is kind of mangaish but it's not that kind of fandom.)

Well, for one it's important that you yourself participate in fandom, as in take part in discussions or check other people out and not just expect people to notice you by your art - especially if your art isn't anything spectacular.

That said I also find it VERY important to have a very strong love for what you do. While I'm not a popular person at all - just have a circle of neat friends - I make art because I have a natural adventurous side to want to go forward and try something different each time. I experiment in art using my beloved fandom characters as my subjects, and take great pleasure in doing so. :D I don't do art for the recognition, I first and foremost do it for myself. Of course, part of the reason why I do do it is for the sake of joining fandom and spreading the love otherwise I wouldn't bother posting online, it's just that it's not the exclusive reason. I think it's your love for art which you have to try and find first anon, to keep you going.

tl;dr - try to draw for yourself.

[identity profile] thechameleonnn.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
whatevs man, at least you have to balls to post your art elsewhere than your own lj or whatever. i give you props for that. hey, just keep drawing, someone out there might appreciate your art, there are always tons of lurkers. draw for the love of drawing, not for critique. the only feedback i get on any of my work is from my close friends and i'm happy as a clam.

[identity profile] jestergundam.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I do have some stuff on LJ, but I spend more time on DA. I'm an amateur, but I love looking at the pretty stuff other peopld do too. I'm just bad at "HEY CAN I BE IN THIS FANDOM TOO? YOU GUYS SEEM COOL. :D :D :D"

[identity profile] jestergundam.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
LOL hit the button too soon.

But OP should not hesitate to gnaw on us DA peebles. We do not bite. >_>
Though I am not sure what fandom this is. Maybe they are treading on a fandom that has lots of wank or something.

That's exactly how I feel about all my contributions to fandom. Lack of acknowledgment is the pits, man.

[identity profile] x-drear-x.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I get it. If you do it for the love of the characters and not the comments, keep doing what you enjoy and someone will notice your stuff. If its more for wanting to be 'part' of a fandom, it might be better to change focus. Also, if you're thinking of being a serious artist [ie. career], I'd recommend getting used to having your stuff ignored and try to grow a thick skin.

[identity profile] misty-days.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm.
How about accepting free art requests for a while?
That could give you a slight popularity boost.

Otherwise, just talk more with other artists who are just starting up and try to make some friends not just for faves and comments. :)

[identity profile] khadaj.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I know exactly how you feel. Though I wouldn't mind being a BNF doing something I love. What's even worse is when the guys get...some attention, but any fanart I draw of girls tends to get ignored, even if more effort's put into it. But I still enjoy it. Hopefully in time you'll get more recognition. Maybe post your fanart on LJ fan communities if you haven't already?

[identity profile] jestergundam.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
As a fellow fandom artist speaking, I feel that anything I draw that isn't the fandom of the majority of most of my watchers, is pretty much neglected. Like "Hey guys! I draw other stuff too!"
I dunno though. People are weird.

[identity profile] pkbitchgirl.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish I had your problem, if I could draw (or had the confidence to actually put pencil to paper) I'd be fanarting all over the place, mainly of my OTP. Sigh, is it sad that the only adult fanart of Repton and Starling is stuff I've commissioned?

(Anonymous) 2009-06-04 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand the feeling. I know no amount of attention is ever 'enough', but...I try to reply to everything in my fandom, unless it's truly so awful I can't think of a single reason to try and encourage the author/artist to keep going & improve. The reason I try to reply to everything is because people like you are trying really hard and need nurturing. I know some people have a much higher 'must comment' threshold than me, but really, what would be the point in looking at a fanart and not replying to it? It takes me thirty seconds to say 'hey, I liked **** but **** looks off' or whatever, and I know that that comment could make someone's entire week.

Unfortunately, fandom popularity tends to be a snowball effect. It's hard to get it going. Being ignored can quickly set into a trend - there's one person in my fandom who was pretty bad when they started and almost no one is noticing that they're getting much better now, because people have internally set that person to 'ignore'. :/ I suggest you comment a lot on other people's art and fics - try to leave thoughtful, detailed comments and not just 'I liked it', because adding detail and maybe asking questions or making suggestions about the art/fic makes people get into conversations with you, and then they'll feel like commenting on your stuff too. Offering to illustrate your favourite fanfics is a great idea, because then everyone who likes that fanfic will start paying attention to your art.

I thought fanartists had it easy compared to fanfic writers when it came to attention, but I guess I was wrong. :P

[identity profile] rabbitucker.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Let's get down to brass tacks, here...

What is the true reason you are making your fanworks, your ats, your fics, and the like? If you are doing it because you love it, then you don't need the attention of others. If you're doing it *only* for the attention, then you're in the wrong business, buddy.

OP

(Anonymous) 2009-06-05 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
It's not all about attention. (Though that's why it's a secret, because if I said it, everyone would be like OMG ATTENTION WHORE STFU).
The feeling of being ignored is more that I'd like to be accepted into the community. I feel like I comment and fave enough that I should be making friends in the fandom, but it's almost like I'm being ignored. I don't even particularly want praise, as I said in the secret. Making fanart is my way of showing what I love, but I feel like "Hey, why bother posting it on the internet if no one in the fandom cares about my contributions?" In that case, I'd just keep it to myself. Like throwing a party, but nobody comes because they're all at someone else's house, and you weren't invited.

I know that feeling ALL TOO WELL!!! D:
I mean, I don't even do that much "fanart", but so many times, I see something on someone's DA page, and think "Hey, that's cool...I wonder what they'd think of my art?" and then leave comments on their stuff, but actually hope they'll at least check out my page in return :/
I've actually seen plenty of comments on other people's work that just say things like "Hey cool, it reminds me of a picture I drew, look at it here! [link]" and I seriously don't want to sink to that level...

(Anonymous) 2009-06-05 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Having a good dA icon helps. Make it something representative of your best artwork. If they visit your page, it means your art interested them, otherwise they probably judged from your icon that they weren't. And that's fine too.

OP here.

(Anonymous) 2009-06-05 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean. I leave a lot of comments (I'm one of those COMMENT BEFORE FAVE) people, but I feel like self-promotion is kind of awkward. Like hey! I'm totally desperate! Look at meeee! I really want to be part of the community, but these two fandoms are already kinda established (aka anon is late to the party...).

Re: OP here.

Sometimes people will comment on my artwork and I check out their gallery, really like their stuff, and want to reciprocate, but just not have the time to do that for everyone, unfortunately (and this is coming from someone who has less than 5,000 pageviews). So I wouldn't always assume the person doesn't like your art, or doesn't like you.

Also, really agree with the icon thing.

[identity profile] jestergundam.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Comment MOAR.
Unless you're trying to get in the TF fandom. Then it's all about who has the most obnoxious OC.

[identity profile] polarbearparty.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
I sorta used to feel that way too w/ my art, but then I realized I do art for myself, and most of it isn't fanart haha

Either way, I'm sure you have more views than I do, so link plz [:

[identity profile] maarikaaa.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 12:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, I see what you mean. Lately I've noticed people on dA are commenting less and less. It doesn't matter if you're good or bad, people just don't say a thing. You can see deviations with some fifty favourites but only two people bothered to leave a comment. I sort of have a similar problem, I know part of it is because I've been inactive and coming back doesn't go that well. Not to mention all the obscure and unknown fandoms I draw for. But if you put a polite request in your artist's comments then I'm sure more people are willing to leave feedback.

I don't comment on all the pictures I come across but ever since I noticed this trend, I've been leaving much more feedback to other artists. I do keep a fair bit of my drawings (sketches, etc) to myself because I draw for fun mostly and it's not that important to me what others think. But sometimes I want some feedback too, just to get a general idea of how I'm doing. :/
