I don't hate the Spock/Uhura and I like K/S/M, but, for example, I prefer Scotty/Uhura over Spock/Uhura. o_o

Despite the fact that I have this icon (^), I'm not a very big TOS shipper, period. It, like most of the Treks, just didn't make me a super-shipper. So this is one fan who didn't like S/U, but not for any reason that has to do with slash.

Also: "bitter yaoi fangirl?" really bugs me for some reason. I hate when people confuse "yaoi" and "slash".

I didn't like the pairing because a) I thought it came out of nowhere, b) I liked their platonic friendship better and wished it had stayed that way, and c) it kinda reduced Uhura's role in the story to Spock's girlfriend.

I will admit that that scene with Spock and Uhura was cute, but it really doesn't make me care about them as couple, and if I do prefer Spock with Kirk instead of Uhura, it's not because I am a bitter yaoi fangirl, I just know what I like.

Also, Uhura was way too cool to be just left as simply the love interest for Spock.

I know what you mean, but...to be fair, I didn't really ship Kirk/Spock in the movie. I shipped Kirk/Bones hardcore - Spock was really nowhere in the equation. My reason for disliking Spock/Uhura is because I found it strange that Spock was so freely showing emotion. With hugs. I'm just not used to that kind of Spock. :c It was weird and made me slightly uncomfortable. I would've felt the same way if he'd done that with anyone, really. :/

I'm finding it very hard to ship this Spock with anyone seriously. He seemed really young to me moreso than the others because he obviously doesn't know who he is yet. He reminds me of an extremely intelligent teenager who's just begun experimenting and his girlfriend is much more mature emotionally. I find myself drawn to friendship fics and TOS era or later relationships.

I mostly choose my pairings based on character compatibility/believability, not the genders of the respective characters. So yeah, not everyone who doesn't ship Spock/Uhura is a "bitter yaoi fangirl." My reasons for not shipping S/U have nothing to do with the fact that Spock/insert any male character here didn't happen.

There was only a giant thread about it 2 or 3 days ago.

Recap:

* it's unethical for an instructor at a military academy to date cadets; even if the relationship is the rare one that's wholly consensual, the rules exist because there is so much potential for abuse. And a Vulcan of all people should have the self-control not to do something like this. (Yes, Virginia, Starfleet is the military. If it shouldn't happen at West Point, it shouldn't happen at Starfleet Academy.)

* it's stupid for an intelligent, career-focused woman who wants to be taken seriously to date a man who's got massive amounts of power over her career; even if he never abuses it, people in her own world who don't know she's The Female Lead (as opposed to fans) will be suspicious of her qualifications.

* A lot of us don't find ZQ terribly convincing in love scenes, at least not with women (he did great in So NoTORIous kissing guys, he's apparently not as good an actor as Rock Hudson or Leslie Cheung yet though).

* Uhura was in the original series a very independent character who never would have dated a commanding officer.

* Spock was in the original series a very ethical and careful character who never would have done something this problematic.

* Whatever shenanigans there were in subsequent Trek series (I'm not a fan of the other ones) in the TOS Writer's Bible and in David Gerrold's books it was made clear that while there were crushes among the crew on the Enterprise, Kirk and Spock were not to be fooling around with the subordinates. This was why there were so many Girlfriends-of-The-Week for Kirk and why Spock also got a few.

* Uhura's character development was completely hijacked by making her Spock's girlfriend, because all of her emotional moments were about taking care of Spock's problems, not giving us insight into HER past or what kind of a person SHE is.

BY THE WAY...I've been a fan of TOS since I was 4 in 1968 and it was running the first time. I NEVER shipped K/S until AFTER I saw the movie, because I watched TOS sitting in my daddy's lap, and thinking of Shatner!Kirk with a man is like trying to imagine my dad being gay.

ALSO, while I ship both K/S and K/McCoy, I am actually more annoyed with the writers for doing this to Uhura--it makes her look less serious and independent, just as it makes Spock look incautious and illogical, two traits I never associated with him before. I could give a crap less about my slash ships. I don't expect to see them in canon. As much as I'd love to see a canonically gay character on Star Trek, I don't care which character it is.

Here. Now I'm a person that has only seen the movie, so I'm going to go off the basis of that. I am also not a slash shipper at all, and largely tend to prefer the cannon in whatever. So I can't even be incidental to your assumption.

The movie handled it VERY poorly. It was abrupt, poorly written, and to me the love scene as it could be called was not convincing at all. Maybe if she gave him just a tender kiss but the whole making out actually turned me off especially since Spock was essentially just STANDING there.

For me there was not enough development for me to feel anything for it apart that personality-wise I could see them meshing eventually.

I've never ever shipped anything in TOS and I most certainly am not a slash fangirl, but Spock/Uhura in the movie made me sick. It was ridiculously random and done for the sake of appealing the new target audience. Of course that's my opinion of the movie as a whole, besides the fact that I thought it was a mediocre sci-fi action flick that had little to do with what Trek is.

While I am a K/S fangirl, that is not my only reason for "dissing" Spock/Uhura. I don't even diss it, really. It more confuses me than anything else. There was little-to-no set up for it in the movie, there's exasperatingly little TOS-canon support for it, and overall it seemed very out of left field.

When Uhura went to comfort Spock after the collapse of Vulcan, I sat in my theater seat going "Huh?"
