Recap:
* it's unethical for an instructor at a military academy to date cadets; even if the relationship is the rare one that's wholly consensual, the rules exist because there is so much potential for abuse. And a Vulcan of all people should have the self-control not to do something like this. (Yes, Virginia, Starfleet is the military. If it shouldn't happen at West Point, it shouldn't happen at Starfleet Academy.)
* it's stupid for an intelligent, career-focused woman who wants to be taken seriously to date a man who's got massive amounts of power over her career; even if he never abuses it, people in her own world who don't know she's The Female Lead (as opposed to fans) will be suspicious of her qualifications.
* A lot of us don't find ZQ terribly convincing in love scenes, at least not with women (he did great in So NoTORIous kissing guys, he's apparently not as good an actor as Rock Hudson or Leslie Cheung yet though).
* Uhura was in the original series a very independent character who never would have dated a commanding officer.
* Spock was in the original series a very ethical and careful character who never would have done something this problematic.
* Whatever shenanigans there were in subsequent Trek series (I'm not a fan of the other ones) in the TOS Writer's Bible and in David Gerrold's books it was made clear that while there were crushes among the crew on the Enterprise, Kirk and Spock were not to be fooling around with the subordinates. This was why there were so many Girlfriends-of-The-Week for Kirk and why Spock also got a few.
* Uhura's character development was completely hijacked by making her Spock's girlfriend, because all of her emotional moments were about taking care of Spock's problems, not giving us insight into HER past or what kind of a person SHE is.
BY THE WAY...I've been a fan of TOS since I was 4 in 1968 and it was running the first time. I NEVER shipped K/S until AFTER I saw the movie, because I watched TOS sitting in my daddy's lap, and thinking of Shatner!Kirk with a man is like trying to imagine my dad being gay.
ALSO, while I ship both K/S and K/McCoy, I am actually more annoyed with the writers for doing this to Uhura--it makes her look less serious and independent, just as it makes Spock look incautious and illogical, two traits I never associated with him before. I could give a crap less about my slash ships. I don't expect to see them in canon. As much as I'd love to see a canonically gay character on Star Trek, I don't care which character it is.

Re: *headdesk*
Also, when I watched the movie the first time, I thought:
* that Spock was afraid of being accused of favouritism initially because Uhura was his best student;
* that Spock's expression right before she kissed him the first time meant "OMGWTFBBQ what is she doing?" especially after he told her to go do her job;
* that the oral sensitivity comments were initially meant to be funny only to the audience.
It was when he snogged her that last time and said her name that I realised they were actually meant to be dating, thanks to his unconvincing portrayal of het Vulcan desire up to that point--remember Zarabeth? remember Leila? IT DIDN'T LOOK LIKE THAT!
Then it was me doing the OMGWTFBBQ dance.
Overall I liked the movie, but not what they did to Uhura, or to Spock with the relationship with Uhura, or the way that they showed Winona's childbirth scene in juxtaposition with the pictures of Nero's pregnant wife and Amanda's death (reducing all three of those women to emotional goads for male characters).
It's not like I expected a remake of TOS to be feminist; TOS wasn't, although it was progressive for its time, and I loved how independent Uhura was, compared to Janice Rand and Christine Chapel with their goofy crushes on Kirk and Spock. I know there was a Christine; McCoy mentioned her. But it seems like they gave half her personality to Uhura, which sucks because Uhura had a better one!
One of my criticisms of TNG was that a lot of the fun campy sexy stuff was gone, that in the process of making it less sexist they made it less sexy; and I was actually pleased with what they did with Gaila, bringing back the sexy green girl but as an equal, not a slave. But they had to go and screw with the characters of Uhura and Amanda, who DID bring the awesome in TOS... :/
Re: *headdesk*
TOS!Uhura really did stand the crowd in terms of not being really clingy with a specific male character. I have to admit, even “The Conscious of the King” (one of my favorite episodes) falls into this trap of the emotionally dependent female character.
Speaking of TCotK, it seems like the Tarsus IV thing never happened for this new Kirk. That makes me unreasonably sad, actually. Somehow I feel like exchanging a backstory like that for the alternate universe Kirk’s daddy issues is somewhat shortchanging the character.
I also have to admit that the movie format probably limited the ability of the director/writers/actors to portray the characters fully. When you only have two hours every scene a character is in matters. So when certain things get repeated, you can give the wrong impression. (Like how half of Spock’s scenes seem to involve him beating someone bloody, and half of Kirk’s are of him being beaten bloody.)
