"A white person has no idea what it's like to be anything other than white,"

And black people only know what it's like to be black, etc, etc etc.

This bs about how "Oh white people get less racism" and "White people don't understand what it's like" and etc.

It's old. So freaking old already. And dare I say that "Hey, it's a form of racism in and of itself now! :D

"A white person has no idea what it's like to be anything other than white,"

Wrong. In a system controlled and defined by whites we have to adhere to the standards in place. For many minorities to be taken seriously or be sucessful they have to "act white", "dress white", "speak like a white person", etc. White people don't have to bother with any of that since they have white privilage and can afford to be oblivious. Not saying that all whites are but many are, often times not even knowing it.

Also, people can't be racist against whites. A racist is someone who thinks their race is better than all the others. Historically speaking, since white people are the only ones that have (activly) done that they're the only ones that can technically speaking, be racist. People can discriminate and be bigoted twoards whites but be racist? Lolno.

Hopefully you understand what I'm trying to say and don't take offense. Not saying that to LOLSAVE MY BUTT but seriously. I know its unplesant but all anyone can do is work to improve on this and not pull out the OMG RACIST!11! card whenever something happens.

Also, people can't be racist against whites.

Your entire comment was just invalidated. Sorry. Who's the oblivious one?

My Goooood hasn't the comm as a whole beaten this argument to death already? I should have thought that BY NOW people would know that racism = prejudice + power.

PoC can be prejudiced against whites, but not racist, because they lack the power to enforce their prejudices. Prejudice against whites largely stems from the hurt that results when whites abuse their power - it's reactionary rather than institutional.

Google Critical Race Theory sometime.

rac⋅ism
/ˈreɪsɪzəm/ Show Spelled [rey-siz-uhm] Show IPA
–noun
1.a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
2.a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3.hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.

--

I suppose you're trying to number #2? That's only one of the definitions. It's still perfectly possible to be racist under either or both of the others, regardless of ability act it out or reason to be racist.

(Anonymous) 2009-06-05 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I should have thought that BY NOW people would know that racism = prejudice + power.

Only to you academics. To those of us who are lowly little commoners, it's discrimination based on race.

(Anonymous) 2009-06-05 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, I'm no academic and even I'm familiar with the actual definition of racism. If you're going to talk about and seriously attempt to understand something, it doesn't hurt to at least educate yourself a little on the subject, and it's not like this definition is inaccessible to us "lowly little commoners" or anything.

This is what people keep telling themselves so they can undermine and hide the racism white people face. Look in a god damn dictionary, it will mention NOTHING of this power thing you talk about.

"Prejudice against whites largely stems from the hurt that results when whites abuse their power - it's reactionary rather than institutional."

So what you are saying is that white people are more evil than other races? They are racist because it's fun, while non-whites are as pure as snow, wanting to get along with everyone, but the evil white man is FORCING them to behave badly. Also, your argument is really fucking dumb, you can easily turn it around. Maybe whites wouldn't be so racist if non-white people didn't commit so much crime and behave bad in general?

Also, saying that you can't be racist towards white people, and thinking that they ALWAYS are the one in power seems pretty damn racist to me. You are no better than the neo-nazis that claim that jews secretly rule the world and want to enslave us all.

I find your assumption that whites are in power everywhere in the world racist.

Re: different anon

[identity profile] jaquenerd.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
anon's response is basically, "YOU SAID SOMETHING I DON'T WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE LALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU."

Rather than, ya know, providing an argument backed by something other than anon's prissy attitude they just decided to ignore what the poster was saying completely. Most likely because they couldn't back up their own argument.

Re: (not OP)

(Anonymous) 2009-06-04 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
A racist is someone who thinks their race is better than all the others.

Huh. So all the "black power! we are superior!" isn't racist because only white people can think their race is superior to others? heyyy so I guess this means Japan wasn't racist for thinking they were the superior race in WW2... but Germany was, because they're white.

Re: (not OP)

[identity profile] cephiedvariable.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Japan took their theories of racial superiority and brutally subjugated the nations around them during WWII. If you were trying to beat the racism=power+prejudice argument, you chose a very poor example.

Re: (not OP)

(Anonymous) 2009-06-04 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Wrong. In a system controlled and defined by whites we have to adhere to the standards in place.

I wasn't really aware that we were talking exclusively about North America, Europe, and their spheres of influence, but okay.

Also, people can't be racist against whites. A racist is someone who thinks their race is better than all the others. Historically speaking, since white people are the only ones that have (activly) done that they're the only ones that can technically speaking, be racist. People can discriminate and be bigoted twoards whites but be racist? Lolno.

Wait, what? Isn't the very act of discrimination and expressing bigotry the result of the attitude that you're somehow 'better' than someone? If you're discriminating against someone on the basis of their being 'white', it's automatically about race, no way out of it. Whether or not it's an attitude about being 'better' is a different debate, but your logic doesn't jive. And I'm not even going to touch the 'white people are the only ones that have actively thought their race is better than others' thing.

Re: (not OP)

(Anonymous) 2009-06-05 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
There are different definitions of racism. I disagree with OP!anonymous that Whites can't experience the discrimination based on race/my race is superior kind, but institutional racism requires that at least one race is immune to it (in that society) by definition.

Classic essay on White privilege (written by a White woman, IIRC):

Normally I steer away from racewank, and I don't feel like getting into a big argument over it so I won't even touch the rest of your comment, but that second last paragraph?

No. Just, no. Go away for a moment and think about what you just wrote. Come back when you've learned the meaning of the term 'hypocritical idiot' and can understand how it applies to you.

Re: (not OP)

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I think you've got the right idea, but you need to be more careful with your wording.

A racist is someone who thinks their race is better than all the others

No. Racism = prejudice + power.

Re: (not OP)

(Anonymous) 2009-06-05 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I think that definition applies more so to "institutional racism." Racism, itself, is prejudice/hatred against another race, regardless of their societal/institutional standing.

Re: (not OP)

[identity profile] snowdevil-crow.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. So, perhaps it's impossible for the country of America to be called racist towards white people. But it's certainly not impossible for a person to be racist towards white people.

...Are you kidding me?

Read up on your history. Racism appears in a lot more forms than you seem to think it does.

Uhm. This is very awkward. I don't suppose you've ever read, say, a history book? Or studied any current events? Or taken any sort of social studies classes ever?

SOCIAL AWARENESS FAIL.

Re: (not OP)

I'm sure PoC's find comments like yours so, so old, too.

Re: (not OP)

Then I guess they can go on their race specific tv channels and wank about it, now can't they?
