I get some good schadenfreude from all the folks thinking Winds and Dream will be released together. And that it'll happen sometime soon.

I'm genuinely gobsmacked that anyone would believe this. It's right up there with the Sherlock fans who believed there'd be a secret episode in the fourth season that explained why the fourth season wasn't as shitty a everyone thought it was, plus Johnlock.

It makes perfect sense! ...If you start with the idea that the series will definitely be finished.

Because right now there ain't no way. If Winds ever comes out we'll STILL have another 10+ year wait for Dream. And the periods between books just keep expanding (= =)

I imaging if GRRM actually came out and admitted he had no interest in slogging through a series that's already "ended" so poorly the fans would riot and lose interest in all side projects. I mean, I have. So it tracks.

Why? People aren't betting the farm on a joint release for Christmas 2023, no one is skipping chemo out of the belief that Winds will cure their cancer, and realistically there will be very little impact on our lives one way or the other.

I come to think the only reason they continued through the ASOIAF universe, after GRRM failed to deliver the final books and after the final season bombed, was because HBO was far more desperate to revitalize the IP.

I think even HBO knows he won't finish those books, but know people will have short enough memory to return to an unfinished IP... or a badly finished one, for that matter.

I wish he'd just...chill out and not post those updates. Write or don't! Go write 20 short stories! Do something else entirely! The "it will totally 100% get done" is silly.

Yeah, I get the whole "the author is not your bitch" thing, and for the most part I agree, but when an author starts taking to social media to attempt to assure readers that, "I really am going to finish something, for real guys, I mean it," and then they don't even come through on that? Yeah, that's the point where they become extremely unprofessional in my eyes.

I kind of assume GRRM is dealing with some pretty serious mental health issues, though, which I'm sympathetic too. I mean, I doubt he wants to be in the situation he's in; it probably feels absolutely terrible.

I think he baits the fans a lot with those sort of updates because it pays to keep people interested when he has so many spinoff shows in the works. Realistically I think he's lost a lot of interest in the original ASOIAF story, I loved the books but at this point if TWOW ever gets an actual release I'll be genuinely surprised.

eh, I don't think it's about keeping ppl interested at all. at this point even he himself must understand that if he finishes anything people would go crazy over it without any reminders. imo he's doing all these blog posts for himself. maybe he's just used to it from the times when he was writing much faster and so had more to talk about lol.
