Teacher/student media recs

(Anonymous) 2023-05-03 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey FS! I've been hungry for the teacher/student (or mentor/mentee) dynamic lately, but I've exhausted all the media I know of personally, so if you know of any, please bat them my way. Literature, movie, TV, anime/manga, video games, even fanfic, you name it, I'll check it out! M/F or M/M preferred, but always willing to expand my horizons on femslash too if you have them.

Bonus points for:
- Age difference
- Teacher is strict/a hardass, but fair
- One or both characters defrosts over time

Not huge on the "I will wait for you" trope, but if everything else hits, I'll bite. Thanks!

I'm a big Christine/Erik fan so I have to ask, er, does Phantom of the Opera count? It has all the stuff you listed but also, you know, psychological torture, actual torture, coercion, blackmail, extortion, and murder, so, uh, YMMV?

I've read Phantom, but that was years ago (and I never finished it). Guess I've got to give it another try, thanks!

Daine/Numair from Tamora Pierce's Immortals books? It's YA but also canon.

If I'm going to be reading Teen Wolf fanfic, I may as well read Immortals. ;) Thanks!

I only ever dipped my toes into the fandom, so I don't have any specific recs, but you could maybe try reading some Harry/Eggsy Kingsman fanfic. And watching the first movie if you haven't seen it.

And of course there's always Starker for a huge age gap and a mentor/mentee dynamic, and I could give you recs for them if you wanted. But IDK if it's quite what you're looking for. The mentor/mentee dynamic is definitely there, but it's very informal and elective. It's not like a prescribed relationship. They're mentor and mentee emotionally speaking, but practically speaking they're basically colleagues.

Buffy/Giles, maybe? I haven't read any fic for them; I'm just brainstorming possibilities.

Jack and Liz from 30 Rock fits all three of these points with a mentor/mentee dynamic. One of my favourites in that over time they both learn things from each other but always stay true to their original character.
