Maybe they are aware of different ways it could come together and know that the execution could be lacking (not enough to hate it, just enough to be a letdown) or think that, regardless of the execution, a lot of the potential audience might not want to engage with it.

It could be all in their heads, a straight-forward shared delusion. Or they could make their way through a different type of set-up, their 'madness of two' the focus or something that just lets them navigate any oddness without care. It could just be a somewhat bizarre and macabre musical a la Sweeney Todd. It could be some sort of biological warfare (like Joker Venom or Scarecrow fear-gas, only it makes people want to sing and dance). It could be a disease like the actual Dancing Plague of 1518.

it's the blank confusion that makes me think otherwise, but i'd hope it's your options!
